Mr. Damas entered the country legally in February 2024 through a program for Haitian immigrants. ICE took him into custody in Boston in September 2025 while his asylum request was on appeal. ICE transferred him from Boston to New York to Texas to Arizona, where he spent the last four months of his life.He first complained of tooth pain in mid-February and was given ibuprofen. He was finally taken to a hospital last week; another detainee notified his family in Boston. Damas was the 10th person to die in ICE custody in 2026, fewer than nine weeks into the year. Dismantle DHS. It is too corrupt, too enmeshed with the corporate prison industry, and too lawless to exist.No one should die from a toothache in U.S. government custody.
