    @jonny

    I don't know how weird this one is but pigeons, flamingoes and emperor penguins all lactate by shedding their throat linings and regurgitating them to their children. The "milk" they make is known as crop milk.

        @jonny ooh, plants are allowed? The amorphophallus titanum alternates annually between growing one huge leaf and growing one huge flower. The flower smells horrifying and can be smelled from miles away

        I like imagining being in the middle of growing a huge flower and going you know what flowers are played out and the medium is stale, its time to make a big leaf.

            What on earth could that possibly feel like, if anything. Is it something where you wake up and go "goddamn my bones are small today" or is it something where you have to decide and then go hnnnnnng and start smushing them

                It's one of the things that makes pigeons thrive in cities. They can eat a diet of cigarette butts and trash and filter out the worst parts when feeding their chicks.

                  @jonny I would think that plant was fictional or at least exaggerated, but I met one in Edinburgh Botanic Gardens and can confirm it's real and smells powerfully bad: not just foul but *worrying*, like "I am not descended from animals that hung around in places that smelled like this, because those that did had no descendants."

                  I should correct myself about "alternates annually" - more like, it makes a leaf annually unless it thinks it can afford a flower.

                  Wonderfully weird life form, would approach with dread and nauseate myself again.

                                  the males are hyperparasites who inject themselves into a settled female and cease to exist as independent organisms through the degeneration of all tissues except the ones responsible for spermatogenesis.
