@Em0nM4stodon Done, thanks! Added a point that truly bad actors can just encrypt locally with PGP. Encryption backdoors only harm the privacy of ordinary people relying on the off-the-shelf encryption tools.

That's the thing about reply guys.They don't usually have the confidence in their convictions to really lay it all out & make their own case.They want to show up in the mentions of people they disagree with to try to upset them or poke holes in their arguments.That's pretty weak sauce. If you really believe in a thing, you shouldn't need a debate opponent to be able to talk about it.

@veronica The Microsoft tech sent to school us on Win2.11 in '89 was very blunt about this: Windows should never be used to access untrusted sites. On the subject of impacts to home users, he was equally blunt: they account for only a small sliver of their revenue. In all the years since, I haven't noticed any change.

@yaelwrites Context is everything. If you are being recorded & transcribed to be made public, I completely understand. However, every business meeting I've been in for the past several years has been recorded. Transcription tools predate the LLM hyperbole. There are security & compliance concerns about 3rd party tools, but most corps control that. It's like protesting that your biz email goes through DLP scans - there isn't a presumption of privacy, quite the opposite - there is discoverability

I have argued with them for years about the number thing, but there didn't used to be any workaround at all. Now there is so while I want them to finish the job, I at least can show people how to set up and still preserve their privacy.
