Molly, having a lazy day - scrolling, commenting on bird videos, getting into arguments with other cats@rufustheduck She’s relaxed, that’s for sure.

This poor person has to live with this for the rest of their life, an issue that likely wouldn’t have occurred if we treated air traffic control jobs as the high risk jobs they are.@Ashedryden This is tragic.

With the news of the secret $100 million investment in Bluesky by Bain, I keep thinking about protocols.@_elena That pressure to turn a profit is the key. I like BlueSky and have thought to start an account for years, but just never did so. I want any alternative platform like this to succeed, but having a crypto-based investor, not the least one tied to Bain, means it will eventually, inevitably monetize (subscriptions, fees, controlling users, etc.). If that happens, it will be a disaster. If I’m wrong about this, I’ll be happily wrong.

Microsoft are removing the Copilot integrations in Notepad, Snipping Tool etc in Windows.@GossiTheDog What about Paint? Please, tell me they’re taking it out of Paint. Not that I’ll go back to use it on the regular—that bridge has been burned—but this needs to stop. I counted at least 16 different versions of Copilot when I updated a relative’s computer several weeks ago. Deters me from ever wanting to go back to Windows as my daily driver.

Today's Low Quality Ad is for this Read Banned Books Shirt.@lowqualityfacts So, now I’m going to have to go look this up. [after looking this up] Hmmm, OK.

Here is this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News show!@thelinuxEXP @tlenewspodcast I dislike the term sideloading. It’s just downloading software. These companies keep coming up with terms to try to make it look like we’re doing something unnatural so they can control what’s supposed to be our devices.

Imagine if we took climate change seriously in the fucking 60s.@danirabbit I'm old enough to remember how for a short time we started to take it seriously in the 70s, even getting environmental legislation passed (some of it under Nixon [of all people]!), but by the 1980s reverted. Since that time, it's been a seesaw between administrations. One step forward, two steps back, and back...and back. It's been frustrating to see this happen during the course of my life.

Can you imagine Mastodon raising 100 MILLION dollars from a crypto VC fund and failing to disclose it... for a full year?@_elena This is disappointing. I hope the best for BlueSky, but I have a bad feeling this is going to come back to haunt them.

If you're torn between Ghostty and Kitty, read this before you switch.@itsfoss I’ve tried both and prefer Kitty, but I concede it is subjective. Maybe I just like the name Kitty. Still, I think the overall look of Kitty is better.

The year is 1992@monkeyninja I hope someday K.D. Lang hears this story. Your mom is a hoot!

Google is pushing hard for developer verification, but there's resistance.@itsfoss We need a viable open source smartphone. I mean, a real one, not some of the garbage phones that have been produced in the last several years. I know there are other projects, and ones that turned out to be scams, but until we can buy something like a genuine open source alternative to the Pixel we are going to continue to be in this data-mining deathloop.

Thank you @gnome for supporting Keep Android Open at https://keepandroidopen.org/open-letter/#signatories @keepandroidopen #KeepAndroidOpen@keepandroidopen @gnome It's an absolute shame that this is what the internet has come to—closed. Everything. Even in open source, but in the for-profit world it's always a concern that anything open in a place that answers to stockholders will inevitably want to enclose it to control its product.

"Palantir CEO Alex Karp thinks his AI technology will lessen the power of “highly educated, often female voters, who vote mostly Democrat” while increasing the power of working-class men.@kolya @sonjdol Yes, & it is wrong. The CEO of Palantir has a B.A. in philosophy from an elite college, as well as a J.D. & PhD in philosophy! And those workers in the U.S. who struggle for unionization & a living wage are hardly his (& our current government's) audience. We have a bad habit of reducing everything to a battle of the sexes, education, etc., & it's an important discussion to have for our country. But capitalists exploit those divisions to advance capital (at the workers' expense).

Almost 50 cities in France have already done away with paid tickets...@GeofCox This is exactly the type of progress we need in every major city in the U.S., everywhere in the world. How much better we would be as a civilization to get beyond and finally leave behind our car addiction.

On the plus side, at least future generations won't have the cognitive skills to judge us harshly.@elizayer When I saw Idiocracy for the first time, maybe a year after it came out, I remember laughing. I'm no longer laughing.
