Mastodon, you are a influence...
Since I joined I have ditched most subscription stuff like Spotify, Amazon and Netflix.
Made the swap to Linux.
Started painting.
Now I am considering whether or not I could be a Person Who Bikes Places.
@MsHearthWitch If you do, please make sure to send us pictures of your bike or the places you visit!

@MsHearthWitch biking is so good, completely changes your perspective

The responses to this have really shown me that the Bike People that I don't follow are actually very similar to the Linux ppl I don't follow and are part of why I avoided it for so long.
@MsHearthWitch read a bit of the thread and... They are hopeless

@spinni81 I've made a couple slightly less ruffly ones, but most of the ones I own are of the less practical for biking variety.
I do have trousers, but I prefer skirts!Did you see the recent J. Draper video about early bikes and feminism? With the penny farthing?
@sinituulia No,I haven't. I will check it out. Thanks.

@spinni81 You'll probably be able to find it without issue, but it's this one!

Absolutely a delight, Jay Draper telling us about early bicycling and how it made the patriarchy very very mad. Many echoes to modern day, still! Also check out the cool penny farthing and the nice clothes! Quotes: “Some people know they are disgusted by women’s cycling, and they can’t even give a decent reason as to why? So they just say: Well, it’s not natural. As if a men on bikes is natural?!” “Custom and nature revolt against your fucking syntax, Joseph!” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7C9YUwPtGk #History #Victorian #Cycling

Yes! Since I started using Mastodon and uninstalled META apps, I started reading books every day and returned back to writing (haven't written anything before since 2017). It's actually a healing platform -

@MsHearthWitch Wow. I had no idea that this was such a hot button topic, and yet… I’ll bet your mute list just grew by leaps and bounds.

Check in your city if there is a Critical Mass ride, usually last Friday of every month after work as it’s a way to ride safely with others, meet other bikers, and enjoy a few hours biking in the city.Always wear a helmet.

@elfkin a few new additions, aye. The "there's no bad weather just bad clothes" contingent makes me want to hurl them into the sea.

@MsHearthWitch As someone who literally rides hundreds of miles a year on his bike, I assure you that there is very much weather that is just too awful to bother or bear.
Also, I can relate on the heat stroke-ish front. I have the same issues but find that my tolerance for heat is much higher on a bike because the breeze of riding really cools you down more than you’d expect.
-
@ahermitforhire idk if I could do a normal bike, probably not? Maybe?
@MsHearthWitch @ahermitforhire
I don't know how well ebike materials hold up or what structures are common where you are, but for calculations: high heat and humidity is unkind on regular bike chains and bolts. The metals rust quickly.
When there are pollen storms and abundant mushrooms, another problem is lichen trying to grow on soft spots like on handlebars and seats.
You'll want protective storage between the nice weather days.

@shadowfals @ahermitforhire That is great advice, thank you! One of the issues I will need to tackle before actually committing to this is where I will be storing said bike.
