@spinni81 My skirts and petticoats tend to be very very full (this one only has some 4-5 metres of hem at instep length, but the petticoat has 16 metres of hem ruffle) so even if they're not getting tangled into the bike gears or wheel, I need to gather them up in one hand when mounting or dismounting, so my actual legs don't get tangled in them when I do.
This is fine, but not fun to do in stressful situations like when the light suddenly changes! If I was sitting on the three wheels, it would be much more pleasant probably. My fairly ancient regular old bike looks much the same as that, except dinkier! There are skirt nets available for bikes but I never ever remember to get around to it, and it doesn't quite solve the dismount issue
@sinituulia Ok, I didn't picture a petticoat with that much ruffle.
That's a challenge with any bike. I mean, when the safety bike became popular women started to wear trousers to ride them. So, you are in good company. -
@MsHearthWitch @brennen there no such thing as bad weather. Only bad clothing

@hermannus @MsHearthWitch @brennen In 45C weather the only clothing that would make biking not feel awful would get you very quickly arrested.

I do have trousers, but I prefer skirts!Did you see the recent J. Draper video about early bikes and feminism? With the penny farthing?
-
@MsHearthWitch oh dang, you're gonna have a blast! It's so much fun! You can always just dip your toes in too if you're worried about weather or what not; just because you get a bicycle doesn't mean you have to bike *every* place (but you may find that you want to)! Welcome, and enjoy!
We have #BikeNite every Friday at 4PM Pacific on here if you have questions or concerns or just want some friendly folks to chat with (post them with the #BikeNitePQ hash tag and they get added to the queue and @ascentale will pick them up and start the discussion on Friday)!
@sam @MsHearthWitch @ascentale I came here to write something like what Sam wrote! And Iโll add/emphasize that being a Person Who Bikes Places is much better than being a Cyclist

@MsHearthWitch not sure how the temperatures usually develop where you live and if it would work with your daily schedule, but in the summer I try and do my errands by bike before 10 am, so before it gets unbearably hot. Also I do have the option to choose a different route on my way home from work that's in the forest next to a river so it's much cooler than my usual route that's shorter but fully in the sun.

My e-bike changed my life. I went from occasionally biking when the stars aligned perfectly to defaulting to the bike.
Currently considering getting a trailer so I can do hardware store runs.

@MsHearthWitch biking is so good, completely changes your perspective

The responses to this have really shown me that the Bike People that I don't follow are actually very similar to the Linux ppl I don't follow and are part of why I avoided it for so long.
@MsHearthWitch read a bit of the thread and... They are hopeless

@spinni81 You'll probably be able to find it without issue, but it's this one!

Absolutely a delight, Jay Draper telling us about early bicycling and how it made the patriarchy very very mad. Many echoes to modern day, still! Also check out the cool penny farthing and the nice clothes! Quotes: โSome people know they are disgusted by womenโs cycling, and they canโt even give a decent reason as to why? So they just say: Well, itโs not natural. As if a men on bikes is natural?!โ โCustom and nature revolt against your fucking syntax, Joseph!โ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7C9YUwPtGk #History #Victorian #Cycling

Yes! Since I started using Mastodon and uninstalled META apps, I started reading books every day and returned back to writing (haven't written anything before since 2017). It's actually a healing platform -
