@spinni81 You'll probably be able to find it without issue, but it's this one!
Sini Tuulia (@sinituulia@eldritch.cafe)
Absolutely a delight, Jay Draper telling us about early bicycling and how it made the patriarchy very very mad. Many echoes to modern day, still! Also check out the cool penny farthing and the nice clothes! Quotes: “Some people know they are disgusted by women’s cycling, and they can’t even give a decent reason as to why? So they just say: Well, it’s not natural. As if a men on bikes is natural?!” “Custom and nature revolt against your fucking syntax, Joseph!” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7C9YUwPtGk #History #Victorian #Cycling

@sinituulia I found it on Nebula

@spinni81 Even better!

The responses to this have really shown me that the Bike People that I don't follow are actually very similar to the Linux ppl I don't follow and are part of why I avoided it for so long.
@MsHearthWitch Wow. I had no idea that this was such a hot button topic, and yet… I’ll bet your mute list just grew by leaps and bounds.

@MsHearthWitch
Check in your city if there is a Critical Mass ride, usually last Friday of every month after work as it’s a way to ride safely with others, meet other bikers, and enjoy a few hours biking in the city.Always wear a helmet.

@elfkin a few new additions, aye. The "there's no bad weather just bad clothes" contingent makes me want to hurl them into the sea.

@MsHearthWitch As someone who literally rides hundreds of miles a year on his bike, I assure you that there is very much weather that is just too awful to bother or bear.
Also, I can relate on the heat stroke-ish front. I have the same issues but find that my tolerance for heat is much higher on a bike because the breeze of riding really cools you down more than you’d expect.
-
@ahermitforhire idk if I could do a normal bike, probably not? Maybe?
@MsHearthWitch @ahermitforhire
I don't know how well ebike materials hold up or what structures are common where you are, but for calculations: high heat and humidity is unkind on regular bike chains and bolts. The metals rust quickly.
When there are pollen storms and abundant mushrooms, another problem is lichen trying to grow on soft spots like on handlebars and seats.
You'll want protective storage between the nice weather days.

@shadowfals @ahermitforhire That is great advice, thank you! One of the issues I will need to tackle before actually committing to this is where I will be storing said bike.

@MsHearthWitch
Yes! Since I started using Mastodon and uninstalled META apps, I started reading books every day and returned back to writing (haven't written anything before since 2017). It's actually a healing platform@magdalena_nik I agree! I've actually been thinking about getting back into writing again. I haven't written in at least that long myself.
-
@MsHearthWitch If you do, please make sure to send us pictures of your bike or the places you visit!

@seabass Absolutely I will, but unless my art business pops OFF it's gonna be a year or more before it's financially feasible.

@MsHearthWitch Ah, a lack of money getting in the way, as it usually does
Wishing you all the best with your art business though! -

Wishing you all the best with your art business though!@seabass Yeaah, it's mostly because generally I have learned going with the cheapest possible option just leads to spending more money again in the future.

@MsHearthWitch oh man, I'm so sorry to hear this

Most places in the U.S. fail to realize the importance of biking as transportation - even for those who never ride.
I hope you're still interested.

@hermannus 42C and higher and a medical condition that responds poorly to heat would disagree.
@MsHearthWitch @hermannus i don't relish biking in 38c weather, and hotter is worse, but during the nicer parts of the year I prefer cycling to driving, just always bring water and snacks

@spinni81 My skirts and petticoats tend to be very very full (this one only has some 4-5 metres of hem at instep length, but the petticoat has 16 metres of hem ruffle) so even if they're not getting tangled into the bike gears or wheel, I need to gather them up in one hand when mounting or dismounting, so my actual legs don't get tangled in them when I do.
This is fine, but not fun to do in stressful situations like when the light suddenly changes! If I was sitting on the three wheels, it would be much more pleasant probably.My fairly ancient regular old bike looks much the same as that, except dinkier! There are skirt nets available for bikes but I never ever remember to get around to it, and it doesn't quite solve the dismount issue
@sinituulia @spinni81 I have one of those Edwardian trouser skirts that was originally designed for ladies to bike (the buttons down the middle open to make it fully trousers). No petticoats with this one I’m afraid, bloomers only.

@irgndsondepp Thank you! This is very encouraging, and yeah I live kind of between two cities so any major trips would require the car. BUT there are shops including a decent grocery store and many restaurants and cafes and parks in very very easy biking distance. Including a library that I cannot walk to given my current body but could bike to!
I've decided any and all future art sale profits are going towards my bike purchase fund.
@MsHearthWitch @irgndsondepp for groceries we have something in the Netherlands called a bakfiets (can also be electric). They come in all shapes and sizes but basically you have a box either in front or behind you, and some are inline wheeled and some have 3 wheels. Most people here load them up with kids for the school or daycare run, but I have used mine for garden center trips

@Frantasaur @irgndsondepp Yes! From what I can tell over here this style is called a cargo bike. It's definitely something I'm considering.
It's between this style bike, or a more traditional ebike with a trailer for dog+cargo
