    Mastodon, you are a influence...

Since I joined I have ditched most subscription stuff like Spotify, Amazon and Netflix.

    Made the swap to Linux.

    Started painting.

Now I am considering whether or not I could be a Person Who Bikes Places.

Yes! Since I started using Mastodon and uninstalled META apps, I started reading books every day and returned back to writing (haven't written anything before since 2017). It's actually a healing platform

@spinni81 You'll probably be able to find it without issue, but it's this one!

Absolutely a delight, Jay Draper telling us about early bicycling and how it made the patriarchy very very mad. Many echoes to modern day, still! Also check out the cool penny farthing and the nice clothes! Quotes: “Some people know they are disgusted by women’s cycling, and they can’t even give a decent reason as to why? So they just say: Well, it’s not natural. As if a men on bikes is natural?!” “Custom and nature revolt against your fucking syntax, Joseph!” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7C9YUwPtGk #History #Victorian #Cycling

Check in your city if there is a Critical Mass ride, usually last Friday of every month after work as it’s a way to ride safely with others, meet other bikers, and enjoy a few hours biking in the city.

                Always wear a helmet.

                Just a moment...

@MsHearthWitch As someone who literally rides hundreds of miles a year on his bike, I assure you that there is very much weather that is just too awful to bother or bear.

Also, I can relate on the heat stroke-ish front. I have the same issues but find that my tolerance for heat is much higher on a bike because the breeze of riding really cools you down more than you’d expect.

I don't know how well ebike materials hold up or what structures are common where you are, but for calculations: high heat and humidity is unkind on regular bike chains and bolts. The metals rust quickly.

When there are pollen storms and abundant mushrooms, another problem is lichen trying to grow on soft spots like on handlebars and seats.

You'll want protective storage between the nice weather days.

@shadowfals @ahermitforhire That is great advice, thank you! One of the issues I will need to tackle before actually committing to this is where I will be storing said bike.

Most places in the U.S. fail to realize the importance of biking as transportation - even for those who never ride.

                                  I hope you're still interested.

                                        Mastodon, you are a influence...

Since I joined I have ditched most subscription stuff like Spotify, Amazon and Netflix.

                                        Made the swap to Linux.

                                        Started painting.

Now I am considering whether or not I could be a Person Who Bikes Places.

@spinni81 My skirts and petticoats tend to be very very full (this one only has some 4-5 metres of hem at instep length, but the petticoat has 16 metres of hem ruffle) so even if they're not getting tangled into the bike gears or wheel, I need to gather them up in one hand when mounting or dismounting, so my actual legs don't get tangled in them when I do. 😄 This is fine, but not fun to do in stressful situations like when the light suddenly changes! If I was sitting on the three wheels, it would be much more pleasant probably.

My fairly ancient regular old bike looks much the same as that, except dinkier! There are skirt nets available for bikes but I never ever remember to get around to it, and it doesn't quite solve the dismount issue

@sinituulia @spinni81 I have one of those Edwardian trouser skirts that was originally designed for ladies to bike (the buttons down the middle open to make it fully trousers). No petticoats with this one I’m afraid, bloomers only. 😅
