Black woman: Black people don’t feel comfortable on Mastodon and Bluesky!!
Everyone else: here’s why you’re wrong and I know better than you!
Honestly some of y’all sound like the ‘I have one minority friend and they say it’s okay for me to say X’ type of people
-
@skinnylatte black people aren't safe anywhere, especially in spaces controlled by white people.
@macacator @skinnylatte I know it’s not much but black people are safe, cherished and valued with me.

@skinnylatte That conversation was excruciating

Fellow white people:
If you've ever said "Believe women" but then posted this kind of response to a Black woman, SHAME, SHAME on you.
@skinnylatteAnd if you don't think you should believe women, fuck off.

@skinnylatte this is an important point. Thank you. I’ve seen that as well.
Bluesky is very wealthy white centric. Now with a private equity CEO & AI I am thinking it will become more exclusive
Mastodon is very white European centric. It still has the potential to be more inclusive with time.
@oldredsubby @skinnylatte It is important to recognize that the lived experiences of Black Americans, are distinct from the 1.6 billion people globally with whom they share partial ancestry. Conflating isolated viewpoints as the collective position of all, erroneously constructs a monolithic narrative.

@skinnylatte my fellow white guys could really stand to learn to listen to people who aren’t themselves every once in a while.
-
@skinnylatte My question to anyone taking that stance: why didn’t Blacksky happen here, then?
@maxleibman @skinnylatte My guess, admittedly having no involvement with Blacksky and likely missing some technical details, is something to do with how server federating works with ActivityPub vs ATProto

some people here are like 'i'm color blind i don't know what color anyone is'
well maybe you are the problem
'color blindness' is wilful racism

@maxleibman @skinnylatte it did. It was called playvicious. But they got harassed out of here, too.

@skinnylatte See color and appreciate color. That's the way to go.
-
how can we make mastodon (and the greater fediverse) more welcoming for people of color?
@saltywizard @skinnylatte For one, you give people here the tools they need to moderate their own conversations. Bluesky has been doing a lot on this front, and I think that's a big reason why, even though bsky isn't perfect for Black folks either, it's definitely doing a lot better.
You also make this place generally more accessible. It might not feel like it to the average techie, but some people feel you practically need a CS degree to be on here with how complicated the experience can be.
-
@skinnylatte What can I do to help correct this?
@rrb @skinnylatte don't know you dude but the first step is not to ask nonwhite people to help you learn not to alienate other nonwhite people (this is a genuine answer)
in other practical steps, please follow more Black users (and users of color in general) and think about and boost their posts. if you aren't sure the joke or whatever you want to make is going to land, if you don't know them in general, reply less. decide not to.
if racial dynamics confuse you, you should read some books too.

@skinnylatte kind of an ableist way to out oneself as racist, too

sounds bad. but the premise is still nonsensical. how do i know what skincolor the other people have?My dude, people are talking about their personal experiences. "The premise is still nonsensical" is still dismissive of their explicitly stated personal experience. This is exactly the kind of response (repeated dozens of times) that drives people away. Please try to listen.

@skinnylatte German word is Mitläufer (translation as follower is not strong enough - the term was coined during denazification for all those who played a part in not stopping the terror or finding cheap excuses for actively enabling it).

@skinnylatte maybe they are just saying they treat all the people the same, but go ahead and inturperate it as that for everyone if that makes you feel better about yourself

@skinnylatte i hate all people in general and only like some individuals regardless of who or what they are or choose to be
