As such, it is easy to poke fun at JD Vance allegedly bringing a planeload of American food with him to Italy, a country known for its cuisine. But seriously, I assume it is standard practice for leaders or vice-leaders of the great powers (US, RU, CH) (and sure, let's add the very paranoid KP to that) to bring their own food with them on foreign trips, to minimise any risk?

In the US case, I would not be surprised if Obama, Biden, and Harris did it, too. Would love to be proven wrong, of course.

Also, I wonder how very formal and high-level dinners, like on State Visitis to the UK, are handled. Does the US president in that case eat what the Brits offer, or are they just pretending to, and in fact they have their own staff in the kitchen putting their guaranteed safe food on the same plates as those used for other guests?

Now in the ICE to Frankfurt. Let’s hope the French keep their high-speed lines in better condition than the Spaniards.

@Matti_Vuori Mäkihyppy on mennyt väärään suuntaan kun on vain tehty isompia mäkiä normaaliudesta pois pyrkiessä. Olisivat mieluummin muuttaneet sitä suoritusta. Esimerkiksi takaperin hyppääminen, tai parihyppy. Kaksi hyppääjää samoilla suksilla. Tai se vanha vitsi, ampumamäkihyppy.

@niko Kuinkas muuten on, kasvatetaanko Japanissa ollenkaan perunaa? Ilmasto kai sopisi siihen ihan hyvin. Jos kehtaisin niin kysyisin ChatGPT:ltä, mutta kyllähän fediversumi tietää myös?

I was not looking forward to a warm and crowded Métro ride, but actually, I have lots of time, and it is only a few kilometres, so I am walking from Gare St Lazare to Gare de l’Est. Then I can enjoy typical Parisian streetscapes and have lunch in some random nice restaurant inbetween.

Confit de canard and crème brûlée. Very French? And to top it off, a Saint-Germain spritz. (Probably a very touristy thing to drink a such after lunch, but that’s what I am.)

I guess this is one of those streets in front of schools that especially progressive Americans keep exaggerating about in their posts on social media: “Paris closes streets near schools from cars”. Sure, this is a street by a school, and it is closed for cars. But it is barely 100 m long and on the other side of the school are still normal streets.

Sure, every step towards reducing the impact of cars on a city is good. But let’s not exaggerate.

@foone On Windows, you presumably get spaces in environment variable names presumably only by accident.

But an actually cursed by design thing is that there are standard environment variables that have parentheses in their names, "ProgramFiles(Arm)" and "ProgramFiles(x86)".

And then the build system for a certain complex open-source software (LibreOffice) actually needs the latter, but the way the build system is set up, it uses tools that import the environment in such a way that environment variables with cursed characters in their names get skipped...

(Radio-ohjattavia lennokkeja on toki ollut vuosikymmenet, mutta niitten käyttötarkoitus ja vaadittu taito ja paikka missä lennättää on ihan eri luokkaa. Eikä sellaisilla yleensä kameroita kai lennätetty, ainakaan siviiliharrastajat.)
