@khm @jolla In the news it was put that "four COMMERCIAL mobile operating systems in the world". And to be fair I think that is true. OS needs to be commercial if it wants to become option for wide masses and not only for niche very tech oriented people, IMO.

good catch! wonder why they left that out of their post. I agree that adjective is necessary for their claim to be accurate

Yesterday we told you about Jolla appearing on Viiden Jälkeen by Finnish national TV channel MTV. Today they published the full story! 🎉

MTV wrote about digital sovereignty and whether a Finnish mobile operating system could be the European alternative (article in Finnish 🇫🇮). There are only four mobile operating systems in the world: two American, one Chinese — and Sailfish OS. The only truly European one.

"four mobile operating systems in the world" not counting UBPorts, PostmarketOS, Mobian, Maemo Leste, and of course KaiOS, which has shipped more units than Sailfish despite the latter's five-year head start

@khm @jolla I think the original statement was only four with commercial offerings, but I’d need to listen through again. The article seems to abbreviate that.

              1. KaiOS is not noticeably less 'smart' than Jolla. They've chosen to aim downmarket, but that is not a technical limitation.
              2. Sailfish is also 'almost dead.' Jolla isn't even a company any more, just a brand name rescued from the flames of Rostelecom investment. It's a series of Kickstarter projects with mixed results.

Having used Sailfish and also literally all of the alternatives I mentioned, several of them (particularly UBPorts and PostmarketOS) are at least as good as Sailfish. An ancient Oneplus 6 running Phosh on PostmarketOS is a better successor to the Nokia N9 than anything Jollyboys has in the hopper.

@khm @jolla what exactly do you mean by ‘not even a company’. Most of the people involved in Jolla today have been running it for years. They have the IPR, it is a company, it uses the brand. I’m not sure what more you would want?

Jolla declared bankruptcy in 2025 and the IP was bought by a successor company (Jollyboys) run by the same people.

@khm @jolla in other words … a new company. So probably not fair to say it is hardly a company?

The move allowed them to rid themselves of Russian shareholders so while I’m sure it wasn’t ideal, it was probably necessary.

Yes. A new company. To hold the IP of Jolla, because Jolla was dissolved, making it not a company any more. Which is what I said. Glad we could get there in the end.

So I’m not sure what your criticism is trying to say? What does it matter that it’s a new company? Isn’t that actually a good thing?

The original response to my post was slagging KaiOS and implying that Jolla had some kind of advantage over it. I was pointing out that KaiOS Technologies, Limited still exists, whereas Jolla Oy does not.

In fact, between Jolla Oy, Jolla Group Ltd, Seafarix, and Jollyboys, it's possible they've produced more companies than phones. I can tell you're emotionally invested in Sailfish, but I do not regard this as a promising sign of future success.

@khm @jolla I have no experience of KaiOS so will refrain from commenting on it.

I just feel your framing of saying, literally, that ‘Jolla is not even a company’ is unfair?

I mean even if you wanted to be super pedantic and say that, well, Jolly Boys does not include ‘Jolla’ in the name (having a company name separate from a brand is very common), they have the trademark and there actually is a registered Jolla Mobile company.

I stated a fact. I regret that you feel it was unfair of me, but I do not believe that alters the basic tenet of the fact qua fact. I am open to the idea that my interpretation of their corporate history may be unduly pessimistic, but there has been a lot of flailing without much to show for it, and the fact that there are even more companies now doesn't really fill me with hope.

I always wondered why money people played so many games with corporate naming and subsidiaries and so forth; who is credulous enough to take it at face value?
