Expecting driverless taxis to respect bike lanes “too high a bar” – because customers want to be dropped off in them, autonomous vehicle firm Waymo tells cyclists
Waymo, the autonomous driving tech firm whose so-called ‘robo-taxis’ are now roaming the streets of London, has allegedly told cycling campaigners that expecting their driverless cars to respect cycle lanes is “too high a bar” – because their customers want to be dropped off in them.But Waymo has denied making such a claim, instead pointing ... Ok, for once in my life, I'm on Waymo's side on this. You're focusing on the car. Focus instead on the people. Taxis have been stopping in travel lanes to discharge and pick up passengers ever since we have had taxis. Now we're supposed to expect taxis to NOT drop off and pick up at the curb because bike lanes are somehow different from other travel lanes? If I'm driving a taxi, I'm going to let my PEDESTRIANS out at the sidewalk. I'm not going to ask them to get out of my cab in the middle of the street.Yes, it's a dedicated bike lane, but it's not sacrosanct. Waymo isn't in the bike lane just for the hell of it. Would you like to get out of a cab and step into a the path of a biker?

This may be why rogue bicyclists carry a keychain in hand with sharp brass keys exposed and aimed riding past techbro antonymous vehicles obstructing bicycle lanes
@dianea @dangillmor I guess the sales numbers of baseball bats with convenient bike holders are going to skyrocket...
-
@dangillmor Which problem do these self-driving vehicles solve, which issue is so pressing, that we have to dedicate development time and sacrifice existing infrastructure? We don’t need flying taxis and self driving cars. We need separate bicycle lanes, affordable and reliable public transport, clean air, etc. which benefit all, not just some tech companies.
@newint @dangillmor In theory a competent Jonnycab would have lighting fast senses and legal compliance, reducing meatbag driver mistakes.
Programming it to scoff the law eats away at that like molecular acid. It's just a grift now.

Is it legitimate self defense if I carry a log splitter to clear the bike lane? -

@dangillmor I really like when people burn these in the streets.
-
They just keep leaning into the "be evil" don't they?
@mastodonmigration @dangillmor
Are human taxi drivers also evil for letting you out by the roadside even if there is a bike lane?
I smell #fakeoutrage
-
@dangillmor so autonomous driving being as uncivil as a human driver removes the need for autonomous driving.
People being outraged about it here would never be outraged about the human driver picking someone up by the roadside though.

@dangillmor Laws for thee but not for me is, after all, the ethos of a rapidly encroaching religious techno fascism.

Is it legitimate self defense if I carry a log splitter to clear the bike lane?Do you swear to never use pedestrian sidewalks with your bike?
-
@gogojack @dangillmor The discussion is not about autonomous cars driving over people, it's about cyclists being "doored" by autonomous cars programmed to illegally stop in bike lanes.
@bladecoder @gogojack @dangillmor
Wouldn't it be the human passengers doing the dooring?
-
@sgail @dangillmor Aren't these the same self-driving taxis that drove straight into water, onto train tracks, ran over children, etc?

People are begging for something to be outraged about nowadays.
-
@dangillmor Google shouldn’t put it like that; otherwise, their cars will end up being flipped upside down by an angry member of the public wielding a shovel.
@fenixmaster @dangillmor if convenience and "what I want" are the requirements for an action, then I see a LOT of damage to these cars soon

@ovoao Yes. The article also mentions a failing system that is supposed to warn passengers before they step out.

@dangillmor unrelated, but I'm curious what London cabbies will think of this encroachment into their industry.
Will Waymo need to pass "The Knowledge" in order to be licensed as a cab in London?
