    @joncounts
    Probably not half as well as separated paths @SimonCHulse

    @RedRobyn @joncounts no, but shared paths are going to get built much more often than routes with double grade separation for cars/cyclists/walkers each on their own level.

      @SimonCHulse
      And I'm very much afraid they are going to be created rather than built.
      By simply legislating for riding on existing footpaths and thus abdicating responsibility for any other cycling safety projects

        @RedRobyn @SimonCHulse @joncounts there are actually a lot of "multi-use paths" in Waterloo (and Kitchener) in Ontario. Usually they are indeed wider than the preexisting sidewalks (footpaths) at least. And they have different markings from a sidewalk. Still not as good as dedicated infrastructure but better than a sharrow.

          @va2lam @RedRobyn @joncounts our new Te Ara Tupua cycleway in Wellington has pedestrian and cyclist lanes with raised paint markers that you can feel when biking if you roll over them.

                  @RedRobyn @va2lam @joncounts it’s amazing- we had a team of Dutch consultants work on it because it’s both of the things they’re good at—controlling water AND cycling.

                    Ours had both WK/NZTA and Kiwirail getting involved in the design. I question some of the decisions

                                @SimonCHulse its awesome that they did this and that they have opened the design up. But its odd that there's no obvious way to buy it. You can't 3D print a bell so its not like we can all go do it ourselves. Why go through all the other hoopla without making the thing?

                                @Niall @SimonCHulse the “why” is because car companies love making up solutions to cycling safety non-problems for PR and moral licensing the real damage they do to cyclists

                                  @edeverett @Niall it is a real problem, though, as a cyclist I’ve encountered walkers and runners getting in my way and not moving cause they can’t hear me coming on account of headphones.

                                    @SimonCHulse @edeverett @Niall

                                    The real issue is that cyclists are forced to share paths with walkers and runners.

                                    Ban cars, hand roads over to cyclists, the 'non-problem' disappears.
