Well the rains have finally stopped but there is still plenty of open water in the marsh and couple migrators are enjoying a stopover in the morning sun (one of them is hiding behind a tree trunk). #MarshMadness #NaturePhotography #pnw

Favoring the higher elevation routes means a higher chance of crossing snow fields. So traction is recommended. Surprisingly, bear canisters are NOT required in the park, but recommended. The established campsites are supposed to have bear poles. But I tend to just bring my canister whenever in bear country.

On this day in November '24 I experienced a wide range of conditions. Up on the ridge it was sunny and warm with slushy snow on the trail. Down here in the valley, the cold had settled like a solid thing. I remember it suddenly washing over me, like diving into a pool, as I descended from slanted winter sun, into perpetual shadow. More than usual, being alone in such a place made me want to tread lightly, lest I disturb its guardian magics.#footpathfriday #pnw #hiking

I read a news story recently about playing seascape sounds to attract oysters and it reminded me of a story a Salish friend told me. Salmon know what river to return to because, when they were little, their ancestors sang to them from the river bed, so they simply listen and follow that song home when it is their turn to spawn. It’s teachings like these, embedded in story and oral history that help me keep my sense of wonder as I get older. #pnw #indigenous #storywork
