@dillyd I wonder about that too. I'm not sure from what I've learned over the years. Every pic I take has some version of that patterning. It would not surprise me if it was a combo of both

@jblue We harvest them when they are very small (therefore tender and lighter flavored, lightly stir-fried like spinach), a few at a time per vine so as not to stress the plant. I'd not heard that about September.

The bumblebees, mason bees, halictid bees, and Andrenid bees feed from the nectar and collect pollen. That covers a lot of pollinators! @carolannie Sun Bear writes that only the corms of the dark blue Camassia's were eaten. Those with light flowers were regarded as non-edible. When the tribes wandered south in spring, they marked the dark ones. I went to a talk last night about Piedmont savannah remnants — tiny pockets of land where pre-colonial plant communities persist, despite most of the land around them being lost to the plow and agriculture.
