@anonymas Tinnitus is complex; it doesn't originate in the ear but in the brain. One cause can be deafness, as losing hearing makes tinnitus more noticeable. However, any inflammation affecting the brain, such as that seen in autoimmune diseases, can also increase tinnitus. It can also be exacerbated by auditory stress, such as listening to loud music or being in very noisy environments for extended periods, or by being hypersensitive, like many autistic people (and like me). I have all those problems at once. So when it's exacerbated by an antibody outbreak, stress, or a noisy environment, silence helps reduce that aspect of the tinnitus. At home, I have neighbors who make a lot of noise and have dogs that bark all day long, and sometimes that keeps me from sleeping or concentrating on anything.

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 878 , Tuesday 24/03/2026Tuesday started slightly later than Monday but not by much, I was up & downstairs making breakfast before 07:30.I had hoped that there might be lie ins given Mrs S is on her hollibobs but no such luck! Did my chores & worked on reorganising my desk, I think I have it cracked! Lunch, in the shape of a black pudding scotch egg, courtesy of Chatsworth’s farm shop was followed by an expedition out to Costco, partially for shopping & partially to get a couple of new tyres. Mrs S had booked us in for a 2pm tyre change which essentially gutted the afternoon.I’ve done something to my back & right leg, both of which were objecting to wandering around the store! Got back just after 4pm, unloaded & then we watched Jurassic World - the 4th in the JP fest & one of my faves. We had a naughty takeaway for tea, Mrs S had her usual scampi & chips and I tried something new - Peri peri chicken (the garlic & herb one) with chips. I quite enjoyed it although it was a little spicier than I normally like my chicken. I might try it with rice next time. I do think I prefer it to fried chicken. Also booked tickets to go see Project Hail Mary at the IMAX next week! We had a really windy & rainy late afternoon / evening despite there being no storm warning or indeed any weather warning at all.Final Thoughts. There were definitely signs that my brain was not overly happy with me while I was in Costco, mostly a little dizziness & the feeling that I needed to ‘pop’ my ears. Hey ho, I made it home in one piece!Thank you to all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you! 🫂 🫶️ @autistics#TimsASDjourney #ActuallyAutistic #Neurospicy #TheMammutMoves

Right, here we go, ExpectoMode activated. Got a short trip this weekend, a bit longer trip over the Easter, and then The Move in mid-April. Already my tummy feels like I've swallowed a roto-rooter and... Let's just say irritable doesn't quite do it, let's call it irate... #ActuallyAutistic

Yesterday I felt pretty toasted after work. I had band rehearsals in the evening, and that requires approx. 40 minutes of driving to one direction. As I commute by bus, it's by far the most I drive during an average week -- unless it's the summer cottage season, which it isn't at the moment. I've recently understood that driving is potentially pretty stressful for me. I've used to blast some rock/metal on my way to the rehearsals to get in the mood. However, I've also started to understand that combined with stressful environment, loud music is absolutely the wrong choice. Silence is not an option, I need some aural stimulation for my driving, and I very much prefer albums to radio. So, I decided to put on some relatively quiet music. That was a great choice! As usual, the rehearsals were fun, and with my choice of driving music I actually felt less tired when I was driving back home. It was a small change in my routine but listening to myself made a huge difference in the end.#ActuallyAutistic @autistics

@oscarjiminy Just the next town over, Kuopio, and haven't moved yet, just starting to gear up to it, and I'm already frozen with the enormity of all the stuff, especially bureaucracy involved I suppose I can setup a housewarming dropin hashtag when I actually have moved in

@doggle @autistics I really admire your living simply and deliberately. Sounds like a great mental place to be for you.Honestly, I'm not sure how well I can follow that in practice. I have so few demands on me at this state of my life. As recently as 4 years ago, I was an overachiever, and some of that still lingers. But I can appreciate giving space to breathe and live intentionally can lead to a happier life, so I'll definitely give it a think!

RE: https://aus.social/@oscarjiminy/116270804786199238I was thinking about autism. I score low on the biased "theory of mind" tests - which seem to be all about reading faces and intuiting other people's inner thoughts.Well, I have spent a life masking hard. I have tried really hard to make sure that people can't see my difference or how I'm feeling. That's the universe I know. Also, I'm not too clear about how I am feeling. I have a few theories but I can never resolve them. When it comes to other people, I don't have a Theory of of Mind (singular) I have Theories of Minds. Other people's feeling are an infinity of possibilities. It's exhausting and I often check out and just let people's worlds be their own. If they want me to know how they are feeling, they can tell me, right? Those two things are related. Because I mask even when I am alone, I have a poor understanding of my own mental state. Because I mask, and have the experience of not being understood, and of being understood being a threat, so I don't assume I can understand people from their external behavior. That's what those "empathy tests" are testing for - the unquestioned assumption other people are "like me".#actuallyAutistic #autism #science #psychology

@cassolotl Sam can have an outburst at any time anywhere. He doesn’t speak. But he speaks very loud when he’s vocal. He has only one volume. Loud. We joined the Wadsworth YMCA recently and Sam has been loud often in the pool. Thankfully, we haven’t broken any YMCA rules yet that I know. The staff has been fantastic trying to figure this young man out. Kind of like his mom, dad and sister.

Hello, Lovely Peeps! I saw this last night & thought it was brilliant - am posting in case it can help anyone! During the last year of Najma Omar’s doctoral program in occupational therapy, her prof asked them to think about tools that hadn’t yet been invented to help people — but should exist. She thought about her sister, who struggled with finding a hijab that could help with her noise sensitivity without adding a lot of weight or increasing pressure around her ears, which headphones or earmuffs did, and developed the 'SereniHijab' (Serenity Hijab), made of lightweight fabric, and padding inserted into the hijab covers the ears just enough that loud sounds aren’t as overwhelming.'For Najma, the SereniHijab isn’t just a business. It’s a mission.“Islam teaches ease, compassion, accommodation and meeting people where they are at. Designing a hijab that considers sensory needs is an extension of that. It’s honoring faith while also honoring someone’s sensory needs and neurology,” she said. “It’s making sure that all women like my sister don’t have to choose between their comfort and then their identity.” 'Expected to launch in May, the first drop ... 'will have 100 pieces, including 50 pull-on hijabs & 50 headcap and scarf sets. After that, the Sereni team will offer pre-order availability.'https://sahanjournal.com/business-work/sensory-friendly-sereni-hijab/#ActuallyAutistic #Muslim #Sensory #SensoryFriendly #SensoryIssues #Hijab #SereniHijab #NoiseSensitivity

@go_shrumm @silkjag one of these days we're gonna need a concerted effort to rephrase these "traits" (read: externally evaluated and valued against neuronormative ideas) as positive and/or neutral behaviors. For me, just as one example, it is not "Difficulty starting interactions with others without prompting", it is "I'm not willing to spend effort in performative, deeply insincere nonsense, establishing our mutual hierarchy and position within a group for your comfort."
