@jonny as for not-quite-animals, there is a whole set of plants (eg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amorphophallus_titanum) that instead of flowering nicely-scented stuff to attract bees or whatever, instead produce a massive disgusting corpse-scented flower that attracts scavenging insects
