Heard through the grapevine at work: Companies are wanting to return to in-person job fairs and hiring events with students because AI has completely disrupted online hiring.

@MLE_online I am pretty sure this is happening, the AI polluted resumes and all that. The question is which companies realize this first and react intelligently.
@ai6yr lots of companies are unable to act intelligently. many even think AI is their friend

@MLE_online Oh yes, unfortunately quite familiar with this.

@MLE_online Can somewhat confirm, from the Ohlone College job fair (had to attend when I was on unemployment).

A lot of people tend to disagree with me when I say things like this on here, but I do think that if AI pollutes the internet so much that we are forced to spend more time interacting with each other face-to-face, it will be a good thing. Less online homework, less online hiring, less staring at youtube videos
@MLE_online I would REALLY like people to realtime work with, and if I didn't know better, I would swear I'm the only person in the world. It's fun to work together on a project with others

@RueNahcMohr You have to go into town and find people to hang out with!

@MLE_online @RueNahcMohr
I've been using up my vacation allocation by a half day per fortnight just so I can travel into London to hang out with live coders in person -

@MLE_online
Oh I really hope so, because it has also completely disrupted getting hired. -

@MLE_online even I, an avowed homebody introvert would rather talk to people in person than waste my energy trying to slopsift what the Internet is becoming

@MLE_online @ai6yr Their HR dept is probably using gen-AI to make the hiring decisions based on AI slop generated by the candidates themselves using gen-AI

I'm not pro-ai, but
These the companies complaining about the quality of the online applications,,, are they the same companies posting ghost job openings that are dead end time wasters for real folks looking for jobs?
(I'm not blaming the messenger. Let's be catty together.) -

@MLE_online we need public spaces for people to meet, which is why I'm telling anyone who will listen that we need to have more breakdancing fundraisers to support community centers

@MLE_online
could be nice - way to stand out
on the other hand - visible! -

@MLE_online i only disagree for accessibility reasons. the world is not accessible for many people. so until our societies and meat-spaces are made accessible for everyone, online and remote access is crucial.

@MLE_online That kinda ignores "more discrimination against folks on the basis of things you only see in-person" whether that's race, gender conformity, NNT quirks, etc.

@MLE_online But way shittier for all those who can't move to a city or another place with a living, diverse cultural scene.

@chris_evelyn There's always a downside to anything. The plus side is maybe the epidemic of loneliness would ease somewhat if more people spent less time online

@MLE_online As a queer youth in a rural area in the 90s - my loneliness ended with the internet.
And besides: Where would people go then? There's a seroius lack of places where people can just be and meet without consuming.

@chris_evelyn the park, the library, each other's houses, the community center, just to name a few!

@MLE_online Maybe it's that easy in the US. German libraries for example are very serious places, no events or anything.
But whatever. All I'm saying is that, other than AI shit, the internet/web itself has done a lot of good for many people and it would be shit to take it away.

@chris_evelyn In any case, this is beside the point. People will still be able to hang out online even if there's a bunch of AI slop in a lot of places. No one is taking away away the places where people spend time with their friends online. I'm just saying it would generally be good if more people spent less time online
