@aral Yeah. The walled gardens (to use a phrase) have gone from picket, to latiss, to blackout.

Not that the Fedi doesnt have a wall here or there. But that is usually, hopefully, for saftey. And not to exclude to draw in.

Also, I'll note people research twitter frontends. I cant find one for insta tho.

@Amorpheus @aral @_elena @vicfroh you are touching some huge topics. Even the foss stuff - for us blind users, a cheap phone won't work. Android isn't that easy to use, or immediate, like for sighted. Let alone Linux. Now I'm considering the Unihertz Titan2 which is not one of the cheapest. But wanting to install some alternative systems such as f-droid, or the other one what's the name... sailfish... Accessibility isn't granted. Android's talkback is much, much slower than an iOS/iPadOS and Windows machine. I have to painfully admit, recognize it. So, every single thing costs money.

@elettrona @aral @_elena @vicfroh I feel you. Watching my mom struggle with things I take for granted has often made me really sad, just as watching people suffer and die around the globe for economic reasons.

Money has become the true dictator of humanity. Due to that, I developed the conviction that existential resources should be free for everyone.

Compensation should be done by those few that were able to unfold their potential because of that.

But maybe I'm just a fool to believe that.

@elettrona @aral @_elena @vicfroh When we evolved in this world, nobody charged us for water. It was there. When we plant a tree, we provide it with water if necessary. We do not demand the fruit or wood upfront. We wait, we watch it develop. It grows and after enough time, it blossoms. We recognize the value of unconditional cooperation. Then, we plant more trees. Everybody wins.

@Amorpheus @aral @_elena @vicfroh I can use the Fediverse because there's accessibility on proprietary software. Otherwise I'd be screwed; this doesn't mean that I'm not always looking at new and different alternatives to services. But on hardware and software, the vulnerability is too heavy.

@aral I'm actually writing a blog post arguing that public institutions should start seeing the Fediverse as the ideal publishing platform for sharing communications with their constituents.

May I quote your post, this is super relevant?

@aral For Twitter at least, you change "x.com" to the domain of a Nitter instance, like "xcancel.com".

@elettrona @aral @_elena @vicfroh Simple concept of enshittification. You want information? Well, then you have to give us information about you or your service in exchange.

I can live without using corporate platforms.

What I find much more disturbing is the paywall of public newspapers. You get a short (sometimes misleading) abstract of a system relevant article, but you have to pay (or at least disable your ad blocker) to get the full information you require to build a reliable opinion.

@aral people can use xcancel to get around that from x... but why? Using it still drives traffic to the site, and in fact inflates their numbers since xcancel needs continuously made new accounts to act as the proxies. Just wean yourself off these sites IMO.

If government and public services didn’t post there & had their own city instance for public services on mastodon, that would allow everyone to access information in chronological order in their feed and people would start to sign up here with confidence. But people go where news & information is to stay informed.

They need to be the ones leaving, or setting up an automated but monitored account at minimum here.

It’s the groups, communities etc. it’s critical to many ppl on FB.

@JoBlakely I know what you're talking about, but I'm forced to disagree. At this stage, I personally feel that whatever Meta provides is gained at too high a cost. People survived before the Internet, and certainly before Facebook. If those people refuse to make a moral choice, that's on them.

@JoBlakely I know what you're talking about, but I'm forced to disagree. At this stage, I personally feel that whatever Meta provides is gained at too high a cost. People survived before the Internet, and certainly before Facebook. If those people refuse to make a moral choice, that's on them.

@Gustodon most of them are old and have their entire business and social group or club information on that platform. If they leave, they have to convince all their members to also leave at the same time. It’s not a moral issue it’s a logistics issue, and lack of a place or capability that will perform the same function as FB groups.

@JoBlakely Doing the right thing is always more difficult. That's what makes it a moral choice. I lost a lot when I gave up Facebook, as I did when I gave up everything else. But, from my point of view, it was more valuable to be ethical than profitable.
