BREAKING: Signal, the #1 privacy protecting messaging app many of us rely on, is saying they will pull out of 🇨🇦 ENTIRELY if they're scoped into #BillC22 without large changes.

@Mannanan @OpenMediaOrg Signal doesn’t require a phone number.
I was corrected - you do still require number to register. Thank you all to the people who spoke up.

@wiredfire @landelare @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim is an alternative Android client with additional mitigations, if you are on Android, you should consider switching.
@reflex @landelare @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim primary device is an iPhone by I do use Molly to have my Signal linked to an Android tablet. Excellent app, well recommended.
Caveat of course that strictly speaking using it violates Signal’s ToS, but I’m not aware of that ever being actioned by them.

@neutronstar @OpenMediaOrg @monocles I think #meshtastic isn't bad. It's sad that #LoRa is kinda patented but at least there is a vibrant ecosystem around it and more of a "carrot licensing" than "stick licensing" approach from what I can see...
- In that regard, it's just a more modern alternative to proprietary modules on #ISM bands.
But it again needs "yet another transciever" and dedicaded hardware (even if it's just some tiny IC) and it's nature of "burst" messaging in the vicinity really restricts it's use-cases.
- At best I'd consider it a faster & cheaper alternative to Iridium Short Burst Data when you only need coverage on a few fixed sites but neither WiFi nor Bluetooth are an option but you need more than a few hundred bytes at 2400 bit/s, avoiding overcrowded 2,4 GHz and being more generous in message size than #ZigBee...
@kkarhan @OpenMediaOrg @monocles
Yeah, kinda getting annoyed at, like every single company it seems, releasing their own crypto currency. Like what??And LoRa is a bit weird yeah, and the transceivers could in theory be yet another security risk on your phone.
But hopefully things works out, and have a great day!

@reflex @wiredfire @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim If it forces me to provide my phone number, I'm just as interested in it as the regular Signal.

@landelare @wiredfire @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim It uses your existing Signal account, it's not an alternative as it connects to their network. If your account is set up with a username, it'll work with Molly.

@reflex @wiredfire @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim I'm not aware of any method to register with a username and no phone number, and so far, I have no reason to believe that one exists. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong.

@landelare @wiredfire @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim You can set up an account with a virtual phone number and then let that number lapse: https://www.techbout.com/use-signal-without-phone-number-sim-61328/

@wiredfire @reflex @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim If you'll excuse me, I'll believe it if/when I see it. An unimplemented draft is worthless.

@landelare @wiredfire @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim I'm not sure what you mean. There are lots of ways to grab a temporary phone number that isn't linked to you personally. Google hands them out, you can create them with an anon account, use it to register, add a username, ditch the account.
Clunky, but it works.

@landelare @wiredfire @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim Okay, well, I don't know what your issue is with the existence of numbers, I made apparently the poor assumption it was a privacy issue, apparently not.

@reflex @wiredfire @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim The numbers being forced. I would not mind at all if they were just an option. Discord of all things does this better, which is ridiculous.

@landelare @wiredfire @really_idk @OpenMediaOrg @mollyim I understand the sentiment, I was just trying to solve the practical problem. I have argued with them for years about the number thing, but there didn't used to be any workaround at all. Now there is so while I want them to finish the job, I at least can show people how to set up and still preserve their privacy.
