    @proscience @fathermcgruder

    nonvoters are about masturbating their ego

    the things they say they care about are only topics to showcase an aspect of "purity" to themselves about themselves

    changing the world for the better doesn't mean a damn thing to them

    there is no such thing as morality without action

    and action is always messy in the real world

    they can't handle that

    so they choose the "purity" of doing nothing at all

    and imagine somehow that they are still moral

    nope. just ego

      @fathermcgruder @kali @proscience

      you improve the world with sustained iterative action

      you #vote in the #primaries. get left #candidates. vote in the general. get #Democrats, left or not, to at least hold the line

      rinse, repeat

      what happens?

      things slowly move left

      the nonvoter waiting for magic pure leftist candidate from the dem establishment (!?) and wants perfection right now or they can't be bothered is a lazy entitled idiot watching fascism rise, with their help via their inaction

      @benroyce @fathermcgruder @proscience it is not even iterative, btw. the "mamdani effect" - let's call it that, is a positive feedback that increased his popularity exponentially. so there is that.

        @fathermcgruder @liferstate

        centrist dems aren't listening at all

        we simply have to show up in the primaries and replace them

        so any rationale that says "it is correct people should not vote until magic perfect candidate appears" is an inversion of reality and is only an approach that makes sure we drift further right

        the simple reality is people need to show the fuck up in a giant mob and register the left candidate as their choice in their primaries

        that is only way

        #vote

          So opposing genocide is demanding "purity" now? The regime committing the genocide is a fascist regime. It is founded on exclusivity and ethno-supremacism. How does one support that and still oppose fascism?

              "you get left candidates by showing up in the primaries and voting

              centrist dems will learn nothing from low turnout."

              Mind-boggling that these truths need to be said.

              @proscience @benroyce @fathermcgruder On Election Day 2020, I arrived at my polling place right after it opened at 6:00 a.m. The line to vote was down the block!

              Four years later, I arrived at around the same time. However, I was the only person there besides the poll workers. I remember thinking, "This does not bode well." And boy, was I right!

                    the nonvoter doesn't care. what's most important to them is "teaching the centrist democrats a lesson." that's their priority. trans rights, womens rights, immigrants rights, iran, etc: not as important to them

                        @SeanJH @fathermcgruder @liferstate @benroyce It's not "opposing genocide" to refuse to vote in an election where "cut off support for the country doing genocide or don't cut it off?" is not a question on the ballot.

                                      LGBT people also preferred not being murdered.

                                      "Among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender voters, 86% cast their ballots for Vice President Kamala Harris, while 13% voted for Trump, according to NBC News exit polls."

                                      It's one reason I'm annoyed by phrase "you people voted for Trump" (when posted on mastodon).

                                      Groups that heavily voted for Harris were Black women, LGBT people, people with postgraduate degrees, the religiously unaffiliated, and I think newspaper readers were also heavily biased against Trump, but I can't find a confirming reference right now.

                                      Those are all categories heavily over represented here on mastodon compared to the general population.

                                      There's not a lot of straight white people with a high school diploma who call themselves evangelical around here.

                                      We should be arguing about how to communicate to the mainstream not complaining about each other.

                                        @SeanJH @fathermcgruder @liferstate @benroyce It's not "opposing genocide" to refuse to vote in an election where "cut off support for the country doing genocide or don't cut it off?" is not a question on the ballot.

                                        @dalias voting for any pro-genocide candidate sends the wrong feedback signal. We know now that the Democrats got the message: https://www.axios.com/2026/02/22/dnc-2024-autopsy-harris-gaza
                                        Hopefully, they will take heed on future campaigns.

                                          my feeling is we win by flipping nonvoters

                                          me yelling at a nonvoter on mastodon doesn't achieve that

                                          but there's plenty listening who i am not yelling at who, reading along, appreciate the point, and decide to vote
