Hetzner, which many instances rely on, just announced a major across the board price hike.

@jeff Moving to a different hoster is ... too simple?
Or why am I not reading "some may move to a more economically priced hoster"?@Bebef @jeff Hetzner isn't the only hoster which is increasing prices. I think Hetzner was just the first to communicate this decision. The reason behind it seems to be the RAM shortage induced by AI companies buying up all the supply.
Moving to cheaper providers will come with less quality (more downtime, worse support, ...). And I'm also pretty sure that US-based companies aren't an option for most instances.

Hetzner, which many instances rely on, just announced a major across the board price hike. A 30% increase isn’t minor.
For larger companies it’s a budget line. For small Mastodon instances, it’s the line between sustainable and underwater.
When servers jump from €49.99 to €64.99 and storage rises too, admins feel it first. Many already subsidize costs.
Some will downsize. Some may shut down.
Decentralization still runs on invoices.

@jeff
Thanks, AI.

@jeff THIS.
Also: if you're like "hehe, I'm not on Hetzner", I've got a bridge to sell you.
Hetzner went there first, but every hosting company is looking down increased hardware and energy costs on top of increased system load because of AI-company crawlers.

@jeff anyone who was somehow still hosting with them after their pulling the plug on fedi instances for false reports motivated by anti-lgbt hate had it coming

@jeff Why would only mastodon admins suffer from this? Hosts of other fedi software should experience similar issues.

@jeff do we know why they’re increasing prices? I suspect its the cost of serving all the AI requests and the cost increases for hardware, also due to AI.

@jeff we're all going to have to relearn thrifty programming. The time of abundance is over. At least for now.

@Bebef @jeff "Acceptable quality" highly depends on use case. Also, there are other factors that limit possible providers, like datacenter location, jurisdiction(s), GDPR compliance level, available features, type of hosting, and the like.
So yes, for some organisations, Hetzner is the cheapest option with acceptable quality that they can use.

@jeff As someone working in infosec, Hetzner IP addresses are the source of so much DoS traffic that I regard Hetzner as one big attack vector and I block their IP ranges frequently. If the prices rises mean a few less attackers, then I'm all for it.

Good thinking.
I ran my own single-user mastodon instance for a year and I culled remote media from storage on a schedule. Can't say for sure now, but I think, the schedule was integrated in the mastodon ecosystem and not set up outside the system by myself.
In any case, it was simple enough that even I could set up deletion of media of postings downloaded from other servers.Backup was actually the biggest storage requirement. Was glad to have had it tho, used its restore function several times.

@anlomedad @mdione @jeff Yes there are settings in the administration panel that you can set.

@jeff I run a single (mostly) user instance and my costs will be up about $3 a month because I run two (this instance and the Elasticsearch). I suppose I could consolidate or move, but I have these outside the US because of obvious reasons.
