Mastodon Incident Report / Root cause analysis:Earlier today, users experienced timeouts with Search, Hashtags, and Autocomplete. Root Cause: Our setup separates the Mastodon frontend VPS (Hetzner) from backend services (for example Elasticsearch) via an OPNSense firewall. Suricata (our IPS) triggered a false-positive on internal traffic and aggressively blocked the VPS IP, severing the connection to the search database.Resolution: We identified the false-positive, added the frontend IP to the whitelist, and traffic immediately normalized. Discovered this morning that the spam AI Slop had a human signing up and then inviting the AI Slop as a way to circumvent the Approval sign ups. Finally managed to ban outright the main culprit email system smtp.oneb.netSomeone is spending an entire data centres output into getting AI accounts singing up to Mastodon. Really i could do with white list options for email domains instead at this point#cupofteasocial #mastoadmin

I see why people may want to auto purge posts on Mastodon but that is unfair to people who reply or quote post, which leaves orphan replies and interactions with no context. It also leaves database entries and media that may come with interactions on servers.I think one option to be fair would be to create a post setting that marks a post with an icon or something warning people that it is subject to auto purging, giving people advance notice who then can decide to interact or notPost not made with the auto purge option can still be deleted but must be deleted manually. It would be great if manually deleted posts had a user panel that users could see and then manage their orphaned interactions.#MastoAdmin #Moderation #Mastodon #MastoDev

@galaxis mastodon code itself has no references to Marshal, as well as json-ld-*, sidekiq uses json serialization It’s highly unlikely that dependencies use marshaling as well. It’s used to encode raw ruby objects which is very rare and subject to Ruby version incompatibility

@fox I added the MP3 as an attachment. AFAIK this is how Mastodon displays the attachment; to the best of my knowledge it isn't a glitch-exclusive feature.

@cdp1337 @TheLastOfHisName @DazRunner would they actually keep the connection for 120 days? I would expect it to time out, and you'd probably run out of ephemeral ports before the 120 days were up if they didn't

@homegrown whoa, that’s rad. I had no idea this exists.With closed registration, an empty allow list, and all posts set to followers-only, you could essentially have a walled garden among friends.

@andypiper@macaw.social I thought that 1. my wifi os broken, 2. tusky is broken before i even thought about that mastodon.social is down. I hope you resolve it soon.Otoh, no biggie, i have several other fedi accounts. The beauty of fediverse.
