@elCelio Not disputing that, I would just caution against thinking those are two ideology-motivated sworn enemy mafioso clans. They're not. Balkan politics are uh... Well. Not easily mapped on Russia and anti-Russia politics., but rather a simple numbers game in the end. Putin can't afford all those hungry mouths, our tax money funneled via EU funds will continue to outbid him.

@_elena Je suis européenne, et je n'ai aucune intention de créer du contenu ni de contribuer à remplir les poches d'oligarques étrangers qui veulent détruire notre Union. Je suis très reconnaissante envers toutes les personnes qui consacrent souvent du temps, des efforts et de l'argent à titre bénévole pour coder et modérer un réseau social européen. Cela ne devrait pas être un fardeau qu'elles portent seules.

@terryaki @dyckron The EU is a community of laws. We're bound by a legal order. Who can and cannot join is spelled out clearly in our Treaties. tldr: only "European states" can join. But that's not what's interesting to me. I'm fascinated why EU citizens would *want* that. What is it about our Union that's so casually sure, come on in for countries on other continents (tho not for others on our own--in general, not about you).

It's a pity that we don't have at least a miniseries about how Jean & Bob made it happen against all (considerable) odds because it was anything but smooth sailing. And the Be- in Benelux had to be bullied by Monnet into not sabotaging the European project's founding principles, btw.

@hpod16 EU countries do their best to keep the EU budget tiny, costing each of us a cup of coffee a day, which results in the inability to finance what could be the coolest rite of passage: every single EUropean who turns 18 could automatically get their #DiscoverEU Interrail pass in the mail. No quizes, no application, no draw.

But we refuse to properly finance the EU, so now the first contact of hundreds of thousands of teenagers with a formal process of their Union is a rejection email.
