I'm very happy for superfan Colbert getting to write for new LotR content, but also .... I'm so tired of this franchise being so inextricably tied to Peter Jackson.

His films are good! But they're a very specific, personal interpretation of the source material, and they openly carry Jackson's personal biases.

I want something that goes in different directions.

  • You realize most transphobic attacks are targeted towards trans woman, and not trans man, right?
    polywog@lgbtqia.spaceP polywog@lgbtqia.space

@serigala_tropis - nope. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Trans men and non-binary people are hated just as much, and threatened with just as much violence.

Is a lot of it rooted in misogyny? Absolutely. Misogyny dictates that there are only two ways to be: "man" and "not-a-man". Anyone who falls into that latter category is to be violently "corrected" by the misogynist.

But if you think that doesn't also apply to someone who has the wrong body parts to be a man, who doesn't use the right words, who doesn't love the right people, who doesn't conform to the very slim and rigid misogynist definition of what a "man" consists of in any way? You haven't been watching.

  • What is with these AI people pushing for AI to take over the creative arts.
    polywog@lgbtqia.spaceP polywog@lgbtqia.space

@aspeed - I recall reading (and it has held true in casual conversations with others on the topic) that people tend, generally, to think that AI is best-suited for tasks that they don't actually know very much about themselves. So someone who works with coding and computers and actually understands that stuff in a deep way, will see the errors that AI makes when imitating. So they don't think it's "ready" for that task yet. But they might NOT know much about drawing or writing, so they don't actually see all the errors the AI is making in that, and they think it's doing a good job. But when you talk to someone who makes art for a living, they can immediately peg the errors in AI written text or AI-made "art", so they don't think it's "ready" to do those tasks, and will suggest other things that they, in turn, don't know much about & suggest that AI is "better" at those things. But every time you ask an expert, they don't think AI can do the things they are an expert in.

So essentially, whatever a person thinks AI can do? It's something they kinda suck at.

  • I have a question for others in the #kink / #BDSM community.
    polywog@lgbtqia.spaceP polywog@lgbtqia.space

@lianna - some of that stuff I just flat-out don't accept. Which means that there are a lot of events and venues that aren't for me, and that I won't attend. I have zero patience for shit like people who unironically call themselves "slaves", romanticizing "1950s lifestyle", public CNC play and rape-play (because fuck you, enthusiastic consent means *from everyone, including spectators*), race-play, etc. I don't buy into the notion that "your kink is not my kink but your kink is okay" should mean subjecting myself to trauma just so that you can be lazy and not do the hard work of carefully curating and contextualizing your scene.

I'm into some fairly hardcore edge-play myself. I'm also a professional creator of theatre, and a former professional domme. I take consent seriously and care deeply about audiences. If I'm going to be doing something scary like rough body play or a scene that reads like abuse? I'm making DAMN sure the environment is appropriate and that anyone present feels agency and safety in that room.

And I'm not shy about saying exactly why I won't attend events where that isn't a priority for people.

  • Have any of you ever used dry #shampoo that you leave in?
    polywog@lgbtqia.spaceP polywog@lgbtqia.space

@pronounshe - it's very drying, because the way it "cleans" is to simply absorb oils. It doesn't have any antibacterial properties or the like, so it is often heavily scented to cover up smells instead of actually removing them. I've used it (and I try to buy unscented) because sometimes showering is a thing my executive functioning struggles with and it stops you from looking greasy, but it's not a thing you can just do over and over again without getting properly showered at least once a week, because it does build up on your hair and leave it feeling brittle and gross.

  • I have no idea why anyone would become an early-elementary level teacher or other sort of childcare-worker, because all it takes is ONE kid who's a little shit, and then all of a sudden ALL of them copycat the behaviour.

Running tech for a show aimed at wee-little kids (like under-6 types), and audiences are perfectly behaved until that ONE kid starts running around stealing props and messing with stuff, and then suddenly ALL of them are being impossible. All because little-shit-#1 didn't get immediately snagged and stopped by one of their adults.

5:01pm, I'm fully dressed and made-up, tickets downloaded to my phone..... and they're in the shower.

Quick take-out from the little Bao place instead of the sit-down for ramen that I'd been thinking of, then. Good thing there's lots of options between home and the venue.
