I'm surprised that most of these I don't consider good/very compelling reasons!

an interesting thread on Bluesky about why people are choosing to build on #ATProto instead of #ActivityPubhttps://witchsky.app/profile/did:plc:rtf3bjc3w2yn4syxtm4r7jt2/post/3mfrp6tovy22g -
#FediMTL negatives:@marcia that's an excellent initiaitive!

#FediMTL negatives:In my experience you can successfully throw events like this with the door price being very cheap or free. Libraries, universities, hackerspaces, community centres etc. Doubly so if you have a sponsor! You'll bring in more new, curious people, both technical and nontechnical, and have a much more diverse and stimulating event that is less self-congratulatory. Sure you might not have a bar and vibey interstitial music and a bouncer and mandatory coat check but who needs those really?

#FediMTL negatives:Most of the talks were "outward facing" in that they were fairly introductory ted-talk style potificating and for people who are new to building/participating in the Fediverse. But the price tag means that most such curious/new people would not attend. I would have preferred a more technical "inward focused" event if the justification for a high price is to bring qualified speakers together in person to crosspollinate/whatever.

#FediMTL negatives:#FediMTL negatives:
I'm not much into sovereignty or appealing to governments/policy. And I'm not much interested in catering to entrepreneurs (which includes many but not all "content creators"). I don't agree with dumbing down or obscuring the liberatory and empowering foundation of the Fediverse in the interest of quick band-aid growth. All kinds of " normal" people can learn if you teach them. I've seen it work!

#FediMTL I know the MC is a corporate events guy just doing his thing, but strike two is asking folks asking questions to mention their name and *job*.Yeah I'm a shit disturber. I actually answer this question a lot. Similar to how Cory mentioned property rights even though he is not into markets, I am not into capitalist influencer culture, but I still explain to influencers or entrepreneurs that the Fediverse offers them:
You can build connection to an audience that can't be taken away from you or have the platform change the deal on you.
People can see your content without an account (in the case of Mastodon or Pixelfed).
Etc!

"What does the Fediverse have for influencers?"
Who cares? I don't! Hopefully nothing, let 'em rot.

Defining yourself by your job is quite a depressing framing. Corporate networking jobspeak

People who wanna mention their relevant affiliations will do so anyways.
