    #FediMTL negatives:

I'm not much into sovereignty or appealing to governments/policy. And I'm not much interested in catering to entrepreneurs (which includes many but not all "content creators"). I don't agree with dumbing down or obscuring the liberatory and empowering foundation of the Fediverse in the interest of quick band-aid growth. All kinds of " normal" people can learn if you teach them. I've seen it work!

Most of the talks were "outward facing" in that they were fairly introductory ted-talk style potificating and for people who are new to building/participating in the Fediverse. But the price tag means that most such curious/new people would not attend. I would have preferred a more technical "inward focused" event if the justification for a high price is to bring qualified speakers together in person to crosspollinate/whatever.

In my experience you can successfully throw events like this with the door price being very cheap or free. Libraries, universities, hackerspaces, community centres etc. Doubly so if you have a sponsor! You'll bring in more new, curious people, both technical and nontechnical, and have a much more diverse and stimulating event that is less self-congratulatory. Sure you might not have a bar and vibey interstitial music and a bouncer and mandatory coat check but who needs those really?
