@mothcompute I also believe that FOSS games should strive to provide approachable level editors and mod launchers, but that's another story.

(if Luanti shipped with some sort of "devkit" mode it could probably overtake Minecraft, even in more casual circles)

@mothcompute It should be easy enough to convert all the data to a common format upfront: certainly for the more documented engines.

Honestly a little surprised that the #ScummVM approach to porting/preserving old games, by maintaining a single program that can run dozens of unrelated but vaguely similar titles without relying on #emulation), isn't applied to other genres.

Would be interesting to see for the sake of mods and crossover antics.

The closest things I know of are #MUGEN, #OpenBOR and the #ZDoom ports of Duke 3D and Blood.
(honorable mention to all the Super Mario clones that ship level editors)

Same goes for Plasma* and XFCE** expecting the user to load externally created ZIP files full of variables and artwork, instead of letting the user go nuts with the color palette.

*my beloved, except for the Wayland mode running like crap on my Intel Integrated Graphics laptops
**not as complete (many of the widgets aren't optimized for vertical taskbars) but the tools for configuring taskbar and keyboard shortcuts are less unwieldy
