Honestly a little surprised that the #ScummVM approach to porting/preserving old games, by maintaining a single program that can run dozens of unrelated but vaguely similar titles without relying on #emulation), isn't applied to other genres.
Would be interesting to see for the sake of mods and crossover antics.
The closest things I know of are #MUGEN, #OpenBOR and the #ZDoom ports of Duke 3D and Blood.
(honorable mention to all the Super Mario clones that ship level editors)
#gamedev
#retrogaming

RE: https://merping.synth.download/@mothcompute/116047330340231488@moses_izumi i figure part of it is that many of their internal systems (movement, screen transitions, sequencing) are either similar or the same even across engines (scumm, hypercard, sci, agi, etc) so scummvm kind of gets away with doing everything under one codebase where other games might have more severe complicating factors that prevent that

@moses_izumi i do think scummvm's scumm support does kind of count as emulation, but only insofar as one might consider a from-scratch jvm or cil runtime an emulator

@mothcompute It should be easy enough to convert all the data to a common format upfront: certainly for the more documented engines. -

@moses_izumi i dont think they do; especially judging by their wiki they are executing the original compiled scripts for each engine

@moses_izumi all scummvm replaces in that regard is the native code, in the case of the above engines the actual script bytecode runtime and stuff like video playback

(if Luanti shipped with some sort of "devkit" mode it could probably overtake Minecraft, even in more casual circles) -
