It is not open source, but is easy and free to start using. I was able to remote into clients Windows computers from my Linux (Debian) computer and it worked pretty well.

Agreed. I ran into the mentioned infernal 'fast boot / hibernate' status.

I wish I had remembered the "Press Shift while shutting down from the login screen". That would have saved me some time and frustration yesterday.

Today, I installed Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 on a ThinkPad T420 laptop for a customer.

Dual boot with Windows 10. So I manually created the root partition in the installer. I decided to set up a swap file instead of a partition for swap.

I was able to clear a Windows 10 user password using the 'chntpw' program from a live boot of Linux Mint Debian Edition.

I installed the program using apt, as it was not on the live boot, but it is in the repositories.

    https://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/chntpw

I used to use this program from the Trinity Rescue CD. Cool to know that it is just available from within Debian.

Good approach. That's another reason to encourage literacy.

I think it is bad policy to force people to do anything (some exceptions). That is one of the reasons that the classroom model is fundamentally broken.

Some non-fiction books on this subject you may enjoy are by John Taylor Gatto:
