@R3yScale @zzt there are in fact some interesting historical precedents to this, too

MXit (an old chat service in ZA) ran on protocol-compressed xmpp (iirc they made it asn.1 encoded but I could be misremembering). WhatsApp killed them stone dead by being a more efficient system with a better store&forward

there’s a bunch of annoying hard parts to this problem, and few of the open systems are up to the challenge right now

@R3yScale @zzt XMPP got shot in the knee by google who cosied up next to it with federated Talk, got a whole bunch of people to mostly be on Talk, and then (intentionally) fucked the federation as their last stage of EEE

in today’s world its encryption is somewhat lacking (even OMEMO has some pains), a lot of the clients are lagging, and the protocol is decidedly Not Light(tm)

@gsuberland At this point I don’t even really believe it’s legal whims (it seems to be because the new CEO) but other than that I overall agree with the points here

I shall refrain from opining other remarks/thoughts in your replies tho ;D

@jaffathecake @ZBennoui @reflex @ddelemeny I didn’t claim any, and the attitude of your response *once again* portrays the problem highlighted to you

That said, I’ll still check up in a day or two

@jaffathecake @ZBennoui @reflex @ddelemeny I’ve given this a couple of hours (and I’m willing to give it a day or two)

But I want to point out to you, @jaffathecake, that your silence and non-engagement here is not going to be read favourably. By anyone.

And they can see you’ve engaged elsewhere.

    @ZBennoui @reflex @ddelemeny @jaffathecake that's good to read, thanks for posting!

as I said in one of my elsethread posts, I get the thesis of the idea (and can obviously acknowledge it's a step ahead in some dimensions). but I am curious and wish to ask: how do you handle the accuracy problem?

@jaffathecake @reflex @ddelemeny it is in fact exactly the case here

you occupy a position of (some, limited, specific) power: you are the designated voice voice representing a certain aspect of moz/fx here

for _that reason_ people would want to follow you

for _almost every post you make_ people are (per the metaphor) inching away from you

    it's ... not great

    F froztbyte@mastodon.social

    @jaffathecake @reflex @ddelemeny yes, I have

it's usually pretty clear when it's necessary (everyone the person speaks to goes no-expression and tries to cut conversations short and/or get away from them)

    F froztbyte@mastodon.social

@jaffathecake @reflex @ddelemeny I'm talking about your attitude and style of responses across, well, all the threads the last couple of weeks

a number of people have expressed displeasure and frustration, and (it comes across as though) you just shrug them off

sure, there may be cultural differences, but this dynamic appears as a running theme (and _reinforces_ why people are frustrated)

again, don't mean this as an attack or whatever, but I ... wanted to bring it to your attention

@jaffathecake @reflex @ddelemeny jake, I want to make a bit of a weird comparison here (and I beg that you please understand that this is not a threat or anything but a comparative reference)

do you _get_ that if all these conversations were happening in, like, a bar or something, a number of people would by now have asked to have you thrown out? your persistence in reply framing and what you take from posts comes across.... "obstinate" is the best word I can think of

@jaffathecake @ddelemeny I’ve seen a number of accessibility-using people critique this stuff, fwiw. A number of them echo the “let me choose my own”

For my own part: given the error rate problem combined with the (presumably) reduced capacity for the affected user to verify veracity/accuracy, I think it’s *even more* dangerous when this stuff hallucinates or miscategorizes

I agree the *idea* is nice, but do not believe that this implementation/generation has solved the problem

    F froztbyte@mastodon.social

@jaffathecake if it's not information you currently have, doesn't that leave the possibility that they might in fact reflect a negative or inconclusive outcome in polling?

I mean, I get that you don't have eyes on this yourself and that you can't speak to it, I'm not putting this on *you*. but do you see how it could be possible that, without these results being open, someone could be going full steam ahead _in spite_ of the findings?

    F froztbyte@mastodon.social

@jaffathecake @barubary just to clarify, with "user research" do you mean the polls on bsky/fedi/etc, or were there other surveys conducted in places?

(asking because I don't think I saw any such surveys anywhere, and I'm _moderately_ on top of seeing this stuff go around)

    F froztbyte@mastodon.social

@jaffathecake @barubary okay so if the (for lack of a better term) problem is that gathering data from the fedi might be biased, what about shipping a survey and linking it in update notes?

Firefox 148, pop it into the release notes. "hey, we've done this update. also, we want to know whether you want us to work on this stuff". you'll get answers from a fairly solid bit of your userbase. it'd be quite interesting to see those numbers, don't you think?
