  • i've been doing a deep dive into SPI NOR flash command set and it is horrifying.
    dlharmon@chaos.socialD dlharmon@chaos.social

@whitequark JSED216H is 191 pages. Almost like the manufacturers do as they please designing the commands for these things, not communicating with one another, JEDEC just adds it all to JESD216.

    JESD216H (August 2025), JESD216G (November 2024), JESD216F.02 (June 2022), JESD216F.01 (February 2022), JESD216F (December 2021), JESD216E (August 2021), JESD216D (August 2019), JESD216C (August 2018), JESD216B (May 2014), JESD216A (July 2013), and JESD216 (April 2011).

@whitequark Somehow, they are up to JESD216H. It doesn't get any better.

Would have been nice if there had been a standard for the SPI flash itself rather than just the SFDP data.

  • Advanced PCB folks (maybe @dlharmon or @0h00000000 ?): How widely available is controlled depth milling, and how much of a cost adder is it usually in low volume?
    dlharmon@chaos.socialD dlharmon@chaos.social

    @azonenberg @0h00000000

I've only done this once and it was on a board that was already somewhat exotic but I don't recall it being a huge cost adder.

There are two ways to do this. What I had done, they used low flow prepreg and punched that before lamination, then milled out the layers above. The alternate is to mill just past the layer and plate the whole thing like a big blind via. There won't be enough precision to stop at the actual layer. JLC will do the latter (blind slots) for extra.

  • Mini-Circuits distributor pricing has changed and the small quantity pricing is absurdly high at 11x volume pricing.
    dlharmon@chaos.socialD dlharmon@chaos.social

@aholtzma It's small enough quantities that a free sample order for all the parts would likely go through.

My guess is that they are wanting to discourage distributor purchases, encourage sample orders, direct purchases. I don't like sample orders because of all the sales followup that happens.

@aholtzma I remember looking at that one back in the day. Maybe as I do have some contacts there but I'd prefer to avoid it, just use what's readily available from other vendors.

  • The red dot probably mean this is a QC reject, huh?

@azonenberg @0h00000000 On US+, automatic shutdown is off by default and would be at 125 C if enabled.

@craigjb That seems reasonable for the board. Those LTMs have significant input current at no load. Throw in a few clock generators and you are there.

    The VU13P itself shouldn't be 25 W, 9.6 A VCCINT at 85 C plus a bit more for other rails.

Pricing like this makes small quantity electronics painfully expensive. I really want to order exactly what I need and not have a bunch of inventory sitting around.

I really appreciate the flatter pricing at LCSC.

Mini-Circuits distributor pricing has changed and the small quantity pricing is absurdly high at 11x volume pricing. Mouser also charges the tariff on the inflated price, not the less than $1 it probably comes into the US valued at.

I could buy a 100 piece reel direct from Mini-Circuits for $163 but that makes it expensive for others to build the project. I'll be buying Macom or Chinese transformers for this project, that likely will carry over to the next project that actually is high volume.
