    He did explain that, if a machine doesn't do what you want, you shouldn't be afraid to pull its plug. That lesson has stood me in good stead these many years.

    I'm pretty sure this is it, I recognize it by that trauma-inducing sound.

    My dad's chemistry lab had an electromechanical adding machine that was very loud. He showed us how it worked. It could do long division, with gears flying and the carriage moving automatically back and forth - amazing.

    One day we came in and decided to see what would happen if we were to divide by zero. The machine loudly churned away, as we got more and more terrified. It wouldn't stop.

    Finally, dad came in yelling at us terrified kids, and pulled the plug to make it stop.

    This one is interesting. A billion records of sensitive Know-Your-Customer data.

    Governments mandate that financial institutions (and others) collect and review this data, so there are companies that get contracted to do it for them using poorly managed databases at worldwide scale.

    #AgeVerification

    The country with the most exposed records was the United States, having over 203 million records leaked. The US was followed by Mexico (124M) and the Philippines (72M). Behind the first three, we see a trio of European nations: Germany (61M), Italy (53M), and France (53M).

    I felt like I shouldn't have another cup of coffee.

    So I started to wash out my coffee cup.

    Then I got distracted.

    Then I poured myself a cup of coffee.

    So that's how I'm drinking soapy coffee.

  • When I read titles and headlines where one let*er is blanked out, what is that preventing?
    bradr@infosec.exchangeB bradr@infosec.exchange

    @kajer

    Some social media platforms hide or ban posts that contain certain words, and the blanked out letter sometimes works around that censorship.

    Also, some religions have taboos against writing certain words, so you see things like "G-d" to avoid blasphemy.

    The french bakery also would have thrown the cat. You want a patisserie. (Or maybe you want a cat.)
