Considering that the speaking voices became odd at the time when the new mass produced listening lessons surfaced, I'd say it's most likely AI written and AI voice acted. It lacks all the real person's speaking traits.

@gedankenstuecke Not counting the janky language in some exercises, they completely ruined the stories. In 2020 they had human written, often bonkers stories that were memorable for all the absurdity.

Last week I came across Ask Vikram story that was basically:

- My battery powered device does not work
- Change the batteries
- My device now works

It was only memorable because I had to check if I had missed some deeper meaning to this blander than an airplane meal bread story.

@itsfoss Firefox's "logo changes" seem mostly as minor tuneups of the same thing, save the very latest iteration.

VLC has done that too, I'm pretty sure the white stripes were originally just white and in more modern version they look like reflector tape, probably as the color amount in the icon changed.

@ilovecomputers This hits home hard, as I for with almost anything, from programming to learning Linux and all, there was very little resources in the early 90s. After learning the first steps of Linux from a booklet that came with the Walnut Creek CDROMs, it was almost insane that 5 years later you could just use Altavista to find help for your problems and discover someone's Geocities site on how to put Linux in a certain laptop and have all the devices working.

My distaste for the current state of the Internet is very hard to put in words without it being mostly swearing. I also mourn the death of actual web sites and how all the nuggets of information are nowdays social media posts, that do not get archived the same way as bare web sites were. SEO gives me the most unadulterated feelings of rage as it makes web search completely pointless chore.

If things weren't bad enough, the LLM generated web sites may start as a promising lead on something, but need to be quickly scanned through first so they don't end up just being pointless suggestions that end with "if things won't work for you, buy our Wonder Repair product".

Kukaan ei selvittänyt minulle tuota ja Kelan toimistossa täti ei ymmärtänyt miksi heidän pitäisi tutkia tapaus uudestaan eikä vaan yrittää ottaa rahaa takaisin ihmiseltä joka on kuukausien saikulla yrittäen päästä päivät läpi särkylääkkeillä.

@PTM Tästä on jo aikaa, mutta oli pieni some-kohu kun joku työtön oli ylimääräisellä ajallaan pitänyt jotain lasten satutuntia tms. yleishyödyllistä omaan piikkiinsä. Se tuli ilmi kun asiasta tehtiin paikallislehden juttu ja sitä napsahti karenssi.

Että haistappa työtön pitkät kun teit jotain yhteisölle hyödyllistä etkä istunut kotona juoden kaljaa.

Täytyy vielä lisätä tähän, että pyöritän harrastepohjalta pelihallia puolison kanssa. Tämä johti myös Kelan puolesta päätelmään, että suoritetaan työtoimintaa.

It was top of the line in '95.

I got this TI-85 for the 1st year of gymnasium back in mid-90s. It has served me through many schools and later jobs and I absolutely adore its functional simplicity even when it can do a lot. #ti85 #calculators

@nixCraft There's just so much FUD regarding Linux out there in general. I've had many colorful discussions with Microsoft world colleagues, who've had a lot of "knowledge" of Linux that has been nothing but circle jerk in an echo chamber.

@CaptMikeYates We have similar joys around here. Gets even worse when they try to mix with IT and sell the customers something they have no idea about, then dump that steaming pile onto someone else's lap to diagnose.

@miiko Kyllä. Elisalla taisi olla 5€ kun viimeksi näin tuo SIMin vaihto, ihan sama onko se uuteen fyysiseen tai eSIMiin. Se on ollut Elisalla vuosia ärsytyksen kohde kun eSIMia ei ole saanut aiemmin siirrettyä laitteesta toiseen, tosin tuo rajoitus on sittemmin poistunut.

Olen seuraillut suurella huumorilla jo jonkin aikaa operaattorien hinnoittelua eSIM:n käyttöönottoon. Elisa on tunnetusti veloittanut siitä, mutta nyt DNA onnistui vetämään kaikein hienoimman rahastuksen.

Tabletin päivityksen yhteydessä vaihtui perinteinen SIM-kortti eSIM:iin, DNA:n veloitus tästä oli 12€. Kaivelin pitkään DNA:n sivuilta eSIMistä kertovaa osuutta ja missään ei mainittu tällaista hintaa.

@jannepekkala Ne on vedetty samasta hatusta mistä kaikki "meidän halpa hinta ja kilpailijoiden kallis"-vertailut tulevat. Heti jos siitä puuttuu varmistettava, tarkasti määritelty esimerkkihinta kilpailijalta, tietää että nyt on vaan markkinointimateriaali puhumassa.

@tml Todennäköisesti kuitenkin toimittavat mitä pitää, tuosta olisi noussut aika haloo jo mikäli tuo olisi puhdas kusetus.

Specsavers taas omakohtaisen kokemuksen perusteella on oikein hyvä esimerkki siitä kun asiakas vedetään sisään halvoilla hinnoilla, mutta myyntitilanne lisää siihen nollan perään.

@lonseidman I've come to have a strong apathy against any mainstream social media that tries to off the idea of something being popular. I have very little faith that anything seen isn't being pushed by SEO bots and if there's any discussion, that's all bots too.

When Digg was resurrected, they should've put the effort into figuring out some kind of a new twist that would promote something that isn't just endless content manipulation to make it appear organically popular.

On implementing such thing I personally see no other options, than Fediverse-like concept that flies under the radar and not seen as worthwhile target for botting.

This was a case of 8.1 to 8.1.2 update, which typically is just minor fixes and no new features.

@ErikDerBezwinger I went from 8.1, there waa no migration need listed in the changelog.

It's not #peertube 's day. I get a notification that 8.1.1 is out. The update script installs 8.1.2. I see no changelog for the .2. I check out the github and it lists this version's changes as mostly bugfixes, especially fixing the thumbnails.

The update goes through normally and I start Peertube. Now all the thumbnails are broken. Regenerate thumbnails does not fix them, but instead results in a lot of error messages about missing thumbnail files.

As there's no updated procedure available, I had to revert back to 8.1 that at least has the thumbnails working.
