It feels like very near future I, and everyone else who cares about computing autotonomy, we're all gonna have to start runnin' the Linux phones, no matter how non-ideal that user experience is right now

I have said this repeatedly, and I'll die on this hill. You should not — cannot — trust any chat service currently operating in the United States (or in Russia or China, too). They can be ordered to comply with the government and to not inform anyone. A government that is embracing fascism and Nazis, that is led by pedophiles, and that is ignoring its own rule of law and justice cannot — should not — be trusted.

I think it'd also help to lobby for keeping to be possible to exist in society without needing any smartphone.
Community linux becomes even harder to use if you need commercial apps to unlock a car, pay for transit, interact with a bank, or authenticate to the government

https://github.com/AsamK/signal-clialso i do want to ask, don't most Mobile Linux projects support running android apps in one way or another? it should be possible then (if not easy, though maybe there's some reservations i'm not aware of) to run the mobile version of Signal on a Linux phone.
@Yuvalne@433.world @cwebber@social.coop They support it at the expense of security. No robust SELinux-enabled Android sandbox.
Then again, Signal Desktop has no sandbox either. Which is…concerning.

@cwebber There is no special device permission to verify the ownership of the phone number. It's based on SMS. AIUI you've always been fine running Signal on a different phone than the one your SIM is in. Same should work with real full client on non-Android Linux.

@cwebber You need a number that can receive an SMS. You can use signal-cli as your "primary" device. It's a bit cumbersome, you need to take a screenshot of a QR code that keeps changing (or patch Signal Desktop to show an URL?) and feed that into signal-cli, but it works.
I tried last year to set up a second signal account without using any kind of phone. I went through every option people suggested and just could not get it to work. Part of it seemed like Signal just wouldn't send an SMS to any of the VoIP numbers that I gave it.
Eventually just gave up and bought another phone. Still irritated that I need to have one phone on hand per signal account or context.
