I'm sure the reasons for the fall in healthy life expectancy are complex, no doubt economic factors play a large part.

But it's astonishing that the article only gives one brief mention in passing to #Covid19. I would have thought that 2 million people living with #LongCovid would be a pretty major contributor to lower healthy life expectancy.

There seems to be an unwritten rule that the media have to pretend that covid has gone away.

    It hasn't.

@statsguy It seems to be happening across multiple topics. There’s a lot of discussion around school attendance rates recently where I am, and so far I’ve seen one mention (just today, actually) of the fact that over half of missed days are either due to illness or medical appointments.

@patrickhadfield Covid most certainly doesn't affect different countries similarly. Most European countries were far worse affected that most east Asian countries.

The UK may have been a bit worse affected than some comparator countries depending on how you measure it, though I suspect the differences between us and France, Germany etc are pretty small compared with the difference vs say Japan

@patrickhadfield And yes, I'm sure austerity has been a big factor.
