@megmac @AmeliasBrain @EllenInEdmonton Nitpick. Under Standard Time our earliest sunset is 4:13pm. Latest sunrise is 8:50. I figure that's a reasonable split. The only way to avoid it is to move south.

@AmeliasBrain @Chigaze Re referendum. It’s was a bullshit question that confused a ton of people. I have never met anybody who wants the switching back and forth.
@Bowreality That's true. But they've got a whole lot of other bullshit referendum questions lined up... I'm saying it's a visible hypocrisy when they're so pro-referendum but don't actually respect the results. (Any more than they respect the results of any other citizen feedback method they've initiated then discarded when it didn't go their way.)

Better than switching but worse than MST. <sigh>
As an example: Marmot Basin (ski area in Jasper) won't be able to open until 10am in midwinter.
On the other hand it will sync the clocks in Alberta and Saskatchewan all year round.
@Chigaze I prefer having more light after work. And this is easier then getting everyone to start an hour earlier.

@Chigaze Ah, man. I was really hoping, after the BC announcement last month, that Alberta would end up on permanent mountain standard time, synced with BC's permanent Pacific daylight time. But somehow it seems right (ahem) that this government would rather harmonize with Saskatchewan.
On another note: This really makes a mockery of all the referendum proposals, if the Alberta government is going to adopt a policy that was voted down in a province-wide referendum a few years ago.
But regardless: now is the time to start talking to school boards & other institutions about planning to change their hours so that school & work days don't start way before sunrise. Time switches may cause a week of elevated traffic collisions, but having the majority of the population commuting in full dark mornings increases risk all winter.

@EllenInEdmonton Well, my preference would be to give away the extra hour of late-evening sun in summer in order to standardize without switching twice a year.
More generally, I think all of temperate North America would probably be happier sticking with a time zone such that "solar noon" is between 12:00 and 13:00, regardless of whether that is standard time or daylight time based on current time zones. But people seem so stuck on whether daylight or standard is better that they don't consider that the actual sunrise & sunset times depend on where you live!
But I care less about the time on the clocks than about actual schedules that people are forced to follow.
@AmeliasBrain @EllenInEdmonton @Chigaze I'd rather have more sun after work. Don't care where the sin is at noon as most of the time I'm inside. And the cycadia rhythm bs is just that electric lights have done more to screw that up then any time zone.

Those of us who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (winter blues) are going to have a hard go of winter when morning sunlight comes so late in the day.I'm going to make noise. Make noise with me and tell your MLA why this sucks (decreased safety for kids going to school in dark mornings is a real measurable reality for example).
