    Imagine how much wildlife could return if we gave that space back to nature

      @grrlscientist we’d give it housing and data centres

        @grrlscientist we also need to get away from crops that destroy nature such as palm. Natural food not increased profits.

          @grrlscientist

          For the benefit of those in the USA not willing to become vegetarians, even a modest reduction in beef consumption can have a significant effect:

          - One meat-free day/week frees up about 90 million acres (~10% of total U.S. agricultural land)
          - Cutting meat consumption by half frees up 300 million acres

          And add the benefits of reduction in methane production and other pollutants…

          (Even substituting pork/poultry makes a substantial difference.)

            People freak out if we convert one field to solar panels, yet are totally cool with the staggering land use needed for meat 🤷‍♂️

              @EF @grrlscientist Palm oil does damage, for sure, but it’s a very land efficient, high yielding crop. All of its replacements require more land which potentially results in more deforestation. Ironically, boycotting palm oil is *harmful* to the environment because of what you have to use in its place.

                @kumarvibe @grrlscientist palm's problem is the tropical environment and ecosystems tgat are decemated not the quantity of land. The farming of it and the methods of farming (monoculture) are putting other species at sognofocant risk plus requires transportation around the world.

                Getting behind such distructive cultivation whereas we can produce oils locally without murdering orangutans, other rare/at-risk primates, birds, plants, insects...

                  @EF @grrlscientist modern palm oil is mostly produced on already cleared pasture land. It’s routinely transported by boat (low footprint) but it does require temperature control. Common alternatives like rapeseed and sunflower take up way more land. It’s pretty tough to find a more eco friendly product than palm oil at the scale people consume oil by. Its negative reputation actively harms the environment.
