@aeva Are there any political ideologies that are pro inflation? It seems like all it does (assuming labour costs keep up) is devalue cash assets, which is another way of saying someone else's debt. And that seems good actually?

@aeva ha I had a similar thought the other day

          Meznor (@Meznor@mstdn.social)

here’s my 100 days in office as Canada’s prime minister: $1 million for every Canadian, no strings attached. What’s that, like, a $50 million budget? no AI data centres. just pure hard cash. pay off your debts, invest, do what you want. use the would-be data centre money to build houses for every single person including the unhoused. all of this would be exponentially cheaper and have more value to people.

@aeva Most of the work people in my industry do makes my life, and the world at large, much worse. I would be happy if they just stopped working. We have the technology for the world to operate with maybe 10% of people working 5-20 hour work weeks when they want extra money or want to do things that excite them and everyone else just refraining from making the world worse and doing non work things that make it better as they like.

I'll happily spend 40 hours a week doing science. What really grinds my gears is all the bureaucracy BS hustling for grant money.

Just give me a lab and a yearly total budget of ~250000€ for buying stuff, paying contractors and paying my salary from, and allow me to carry any leftover into the next fiscal year. I'll churn out royalty free medical imaging tech.

@datenwolf @aeva This. Even if you have a rate of 10% or even 50% cranks, this system would turn out more and better prosocial technology than capitalism ever could.

@aeva That's the opposite direction in respect to the invention of money itself.
Existence of money is the key to divide people between richness and poverty. If you let anyone live a decent life, regardless of money, then money looses its meaning.

@aeva Fears and traumata put people into "act dead" mode. So putting more fears on people's shoulders doesn't make them more proactive.

@aeva Tye threat of poverty and early death hasn’t eliminated those things under capitalism (it’s made it worse), so, yes, write a check and drain the accounts of every billionaire. Every. Single. One.

@raven @mym @aeva I would sew things and do robotics research. I also need a new mug, so I like this plan.

I do worry about how things like trash pickup and sewer maintenance and medical record-keeping would get done though.

@datenwolf @dalias @aeva It was ever thus. A typical three year academic contract consisted of (and still does for all I know)

                                      * one year scrabbling around to get the grants to buy the necessary kit

                                      * one year doing actual work

                                      * one year applying for the next three year job.

@datenwolf @dalias @aeva It was ever thus. A typical three year academic contract consisted of (and still does for all I know)

                                        * one year scrabbling around to get the grants to buy the necessary kit

                                        * one year doing actual work

                                        * one year applying for the next three year job.

@TimWardCam @datenwolf @aeva You're literally better off ditching the institution and running a YouTube channel on your research to fund it. 🤦

@dalias @datenwolf @aeva Nobody in the system (other than the victims) seems to ask "couldn't we try to do a bit better than a 33% efficiency rate?"
