    My mom used to do environmental activism. All by herself, she got earth day started, got a recycling center going in town, and was a whistleblower about Dow chemical using agent orange. She was mentioned in Time Magazine for it.

    Then she went to a barbecue for environmentalists. They put her down for wearing red lipstick and long nails.

    And then her activism days petered out because she didn't want to hang out with these people.

    Make sure you can see the forest for the trees.

    @smutmag Wow, that's ossome. I hope she clapped back at them with her head held high as she left, about the environmental footprint of a thing such as a barbecue (and what, pray tell, were they barbecuing? AFAF).

        @smutmag yes! I just got attacked by a batch of trans because I told them that OTC hormones like testosterone won't happen here. And I'm an ally! I'm also not in control of hormone regulation

        So they're all blocked because all they did was curse and accuse me of enjoying their tit shots. I'm a nurse. Don't care about naked bodies. 🙄

        I did ask them if their "shoot first and ask questions later" was working for them, but I guess it's so much fun to insult people that they didn't consider

            @smutmag @steltenpower That kind of gatekeeping and virtue snobbishness is so counter-productive.

              @smutmag Extremist people can be dangerous. In every group, there are always some who go too far to the other extreme. And ironically, the most harmful people for any group are often those who are the most intense and fanatical.

              @saeedt @smutmag It's like Rowling "protecting" women by encouraging people take pictures of them in restrooms and ask for male security to remove those they deem sus... I feel very protected, really.

                @hananc Well, I wouldn't share it anyway, but it also wouldn't do you any good--she wasn't mentioned by name by Time, She was just referred to as a "whistleblower." She was trying not to have my dad lose his job over it, but he did, anyway.

                    @whitequark It was an earthy/crunchy aesthetic within the group that called for everything being all natural and not-consumerist. My mom will live without a car, and conserve utilities all day, but she loves beauty products and always has and always will. At the end of the day, ironically, the earthy crunchy people were being superficial. They didn't like what her aesthetic signaled.

                      @deepmud

                      Mate . . . trans people don't actually need cis people to explain that their rhetoric is too extreme. If you want a loaf of bread, you have to demand a bakery, because if you ask for a loaf, you'll get maybe one slice.

                      We want self ID and informed consent, so we ask for "Hrt over the counter and for free."

                      Its really not necessary to assume we're uninformed.

                      The OP is talking about something like what's described in 'The Tyranny Structrelessness' but you're discussing an ally telling the impacted group to ask for less. These are quite different scenarios.

                      I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but your intervention was not an example of being a good ally. Sometimes you've got to just be be quiet while the kids are demanding an unrealistic, better world.

                            @smutmag @whitequark Putting blaming individual behavior aside, how can you blame a person for not being environmentalist enough *on a barbecue* that you're organizing?!

                                  @sahqon @smutmag This reminds me of Nineteen Eighty-Four—not just flipping meanings, but controlling language.
                                  “War is Peace.”
                                  “Freedom is Slavery.”

                                    @smutmag

                                    I hate ‘purity tests’ within environmental activism. I think many feel they can’t live this pious hair-shirt existence, so think why bother at all?

                                    We need everyone on board. We need to be welcoming, encouraging and supportive to all.

                                    There is so much work to be done, we can’t be quibbling over lipstick.

                                    We all share this planet.

                                      @smutmag Ah. So rather than make that clear, they set it up for maximum opportunity to performatively humiliate someone. Charming.

                                        In the case of my mother, it boiled down to two things: She had the audacity to get things done without their help, and she wasn't even wearing the "uniform." So they had to belittle her accomplishments and make her feel like a poser. The club wasn't REALLY about environmental justice. It was about having a group to hate on "pretty, vapid" people. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people are more motivated by social standing in a group than by altruistic acts.

                                        @smutmag @Flowermob It probably doesn’t help that activists across the political spectrum hate women of A Certain Age
