    Good morning to Public Transort Odin

    We are taking the train to go unfuck baby cousin’s malware-addled computer, and hopefully teach her the general idea for salvaging these things herself — she’s a compsci student but compsci programs rarely teach foundational computer unfucking.

    @0xabad1dea It always surprises me how bad programmers/compscis are at computers. As soon as many of them have too leave their abstraction they panic. Personally I think knowing how the system actually works makes me better at all parts of using it including programming. But that's rarely what is thought in school.

        @0xabad1dea For a second I was all..... how often do you need a backslash?

        And then, my brain figured it out. Windows does still exist, just not for me. 😉

        @nuintari @0xabad1dea it's a pretty universal escape character in lots of Unix tools too

            Y’all, baby cousin’s keyboard is German. It was UX hell typing console commands on that thing. You have to use control-alt to type a \

              @WizardOfDocs it’s mostly lighting — individually the strands aren’t pure black but the overall color of his coat is quite black

                      @xdydx "We're losing the ability to audit" jumps out at me as making the power shift of appliance-izing everything permanent.

                      I was nodding along, agreeing about 50%, and then "Let me be specific about the damage. We're losing the ability to audit."

                      And pow, there it is. We're living in someone else's machine.

                      @jmeowmeow

                      It's horrifying.

                      Recovering from this is going to be like safely disposing of radioactive asbestos from every single building ever built.

                      Nigh on impossible, extremely dangerous and horrifically expensive
