Y’all, baby cousin’s keyboard is German. It was UX hell typing console commands on that thing. You have to use control-alt to type a \
@0xabad1dea I feel the pain (even though yes, AltGr exists). Only the French layout is worse. I just use US-Intl no matter what the physical layout is, but I have plenty of colleagues using a German layout even though they spend a lot of time in vim

@0xabad1dea this is why we use uk-german qwertz

@nuintari @0xabad1dea So if you got into it through the aspects that are closely related to math, you didn't necessarily pick up that much stuff about PCs
@nuintari @0xabad1dea in German computer science is called "Informatik" (a combination of "information" and the suffix "-ik") and doesn't mention 'computers', which I like for exactly that reason: its not just about computers!

@nuintari @0xabad1dea (I still think that most people who study computer science, even those who are mostly there for the theoretical computer science, are more into computers and have more practical knowledge about them and their usage than the average person. But I also don't think it's that unusal for this not to be true for single people
But this view is influenced by the fact that my university had a comp sci program that was leaning towards the theoretical aspects) -
Uhh.. Really unfortunate line-break there...
Plus, it's not the CompSci student's fault they don't - and can't - teach foundational computing...
But somewhat related...
@xdydx "We're losing the ability to audit" jumps out at me as making the power shift of appliance-izing everything permanent.
I was nodding along, agreeing about 50%, and then "Let me be specific about the damage. We're losing the ability to audit."
And pow, there it is. We're living in someone else's machine.

We are taking the train to go unfuck baby cousin’s malware-addled computer, and hopefully teach her the general idea for salvaging these things herself — she’s a compsci student but compsci programs rarely teach foundational computer unfucking.

@0xabad1dea It always surprises me how bad programmers/compscis are at computers. As soon as many of them have too leave their abstraction they panic. Personally I think knowing how the system actually works makes me better at all parts of using it including programming. But that's rarely what is thought in school.

@0xabad1dea did you at least get any decent samples lol?
-
@0xabad1dea For a second I was all..... how often do you need a backslash?
And then, my brain figured it out. Windows does still exist, just not for me.

@nuintari @0xabad1dea it's a pretty universal escape character in lots of Unix tools too

@0xabad1dea even on windows, I always type / first. Some of the time it works anyway

@WizardOfDocs it’s mostly lighting — individually the strands aren’t pure black but the overall color of his coat is quite black
-
@GinevraCat @0xabad1dea Was this in NL? The only other person I have had refer to Gentoo is @ministraitor
@vickyjo No. It was in a research institution in South Africa. Many moons ago! @0xabad1dea @ministraitor
-
@vickyjo @GinevraCat @0xabad1dea I'm not _that_ much of a trendsetter...

@ministraitor Condolences.

The first time I had to find @ on French keyboard.

It's horrifying.
Recovering from this is going to be like safely disposing of radioactive asbestos from every single building ever built.
Nigh on impossible, extremely dangerous and horrifically expensive
