Like, I'm sorry, but parents have *responsibilities to* kids, not *rights over* kids. Kids aren't property, they're living, breathing *people* who deserve care and love and privacy and dignity.

@xgranade i mean in many cases it seems "responsibilities too" seems to be functionally identical to "rights over"

@xgranade Why can't we have a Parents Deicide Act instead.

@jwz @xgranade because old white pedos want to control other people's children and have an easy way to censor the Internet.

@xgranade so glad my teen turned 18 last month before this kind of stuff really landed, but it's awful for parents and kids and everyone else.

Strange left-wing you got in the US, there. Almost as if you have no left-wing at all and call approximately center left-wing...

It is one of the core differences.
If they changed, they might judge their #gods.
                Neither would be bad.

If politicians gave a shit about children, the schools would feature: - HVAC systems that cleaned viruses out of the air - at least two child psychologists on staff - age-appropriate lessons to help children identify abuse - funding for well-paid staff in numbers sufficient for a buddy system to reduce the chances of abuse - arts education and after-school clubs to provide third spaces for kids - massive, safe playgrounds - protected biking and walking infrastructure from the school to residential neighborhoods Instead we get “parents’ rights”, funding cuts, book bans, and car-centric infrastructure that kills pedestrians and bikers. If social media is bad for kids, THEY NEED ALTERNATIVES.

@poemproducer The immediate antecedent was reading about yet more age verification laws, but the point is more general, and yeah, includes parents trying to exert ownership over kids' genders.

@xgranade "Parents' rights" are exactly like "states' rights" in that the first question you should be asking in response to them being invoked is "A parent's right to what motherfucker?"

(As an aside, I'm calling it "age verification" to reference media coverage, but even that is a pernicious disnomer. It's a requirement that identity be registered with a centralized agency, and that that centralized agency is a trusted attestor as to age. To wit, note how the iOS update to follow UK age verification laws mandates that users register their identities with US companies like credit card providers.)

There's a lot of legislation going around "for the children" right now that will have the impact of making us all less safe and free, making computers more difficult to use, and generally making life worse for everyone. Lots of folks are talking about this as if it is the only intended outcome of these laws, but it isn't Part of these laws are also about children. About controlling what kids can read, who they can talk to, what they can watch, and how they can interact with one another, making it harder for kids to use digital resources to learn about themselves and the world while at the same time making it easier for abusive and controlling parents to abuse and control their kids.

@xgranade that’s just the US culture of total reification, not a left or right thing

@Kierkegaanks Read the post again. My complaint is about how left- and center-wing commentators reinforced the general framing of parents' rights.

@xgranade and their political affiliation is not relevant so the focus is wrong. We had that discourse 45 years ago and it was the same culture of objectification and ownership here. Since then our culture changed 180° but reactionaries are waiting to change it back

@Kierkegaanks For someone whose bio says "no reply guys," you sure are being a reply guy.

If you want to disagree with my point, then do so, but don't tell me how to make my point better. Say your own thing, don't condescend to me.
