Anyway, seeing that the title of the published bill to force age verification on all general purpose computers is the "Parents Decide Act" really serves as a poignant reminder of just how much harm adopting that right-wing framing has done.

(As an aside, I'm calling it "age verification" to reference media coverage, but even that is a pernicious disnomer. It's a requirement that identity be registered with a centralized agency, and that that centralized agency is a trusted attestor as to age. To wit, note how the iOS update to follow UK age verification laws mandates that users register their identities with US companies like credit card providers.)

That shit has done so much harm even here in Washington... a nominally and normally blue state adopted a law that forcibly outs queer kids in schools because of "parent's rights." No mention in the entire law of the fact that kids have their own rights, and that those rights include not being subjected to queerphobic violence at the hands of the state.

@xgranade I bring this up a lot, but a government report in the UK just last year showed that parents are responsible for 55% of cases of emotional child abuse, and 82% of cases of physical child abuse, and also that trans kids were over 80% more likely to be abused than cis kids.

That didn't stop the government pulling the same shit, though. Or the Prime Minister openly, publicly, and unequivocally saying that children at an elevated risk of abuse should be exposed to the exact people statistically most likely to be their abusers.

      It's an atrocity.

@xgranade I'm also displeased that the "this is to protect the children from big tech!" line is apparently taken seriously.

If technology companies hated the idea of tracking user ages at the OS level they would be making a bigger stink about it, and we would not be seeing so many similar bills advocating for just that pop up at the same time.

@xgranade Whereby parents deciding they want their kids to have access without surveillance are screwed.

@floatybirb @xgranade Well, some people already can't use US credit cards precisely because of US politics. Notably some members of the International Criminal Court.

So their list of everyday annoyances expands to not being able to use most of the Internet in the UK I guess.

                > this is to protect the children from big tech!"

It's almost as if the people doing the thing that people need to be protected from should be forced to stop doing that thing, rather than the apparent victims having to be the ones restrained and restricted.

Besides, it's not like the things that are harmful to children are somehow magically not harmful to adults. If big tech is hurting us, and they're in an oligopoly position such that we can't really avoid them, then arguments about adults getting to be free to make choices don't really hold up. So... Burn them all.

Not that any of this is to protect people, children or otherwise.

@xgranade i mean in many cases it seems "responsibilities too" seems to be functionally identical to "rights over"

@jwz @xgranade because old white pedos want to control other people's children and have an easy way to censor the Internet.

I am so angry and disappointed at all the left- and center-wing commentators who bought into the right-wing framing of "parent's rights" as being more important than children's rights.

Like, I'm sorry, but parents have *responsibilities to* kids, not *rights over* kids. Kids aren't property, they're living, breathing *people* who deserve care and love and privacy and dignity.

If politicians gave a shit about children, the schools would feature: - HVAC systems that cleaned viruses out of the air - at least two child psychologists on staff - age-appropriate lessons to help children identify abuse - funding for well-paid staff in numbers sufficient for a buddy system to reduce the chances of abuse - arts education and after-school clubs to provide third spaces for kids - massive, safe playgrounds - protected biking and walking infrastructure from the school to residential neighborhoods Instead we get “parents’ rights”, funding cuts, book bans, and car-centric infrastructure that kills pedestrians and bikers. If social media is bad for kids, THEY NEED ALTERNATIVES.

@poemproducer The immediate antecedent was reading about yet more age verification laws, but the point is more general, and yeah, includes parents trying to exert ownership over kids' genders.
