New project - should be a pretty quick knit on 5.5 mm needles.

New project - should be a pretty quick knit on 5.5 mm needles.
I'm using this yarn and I'm not sure whether I like it. Probably not.
It's a novelty yarn and I'm not even sure how it's constructed. It's not plied, I think it's a sort of tube. Also the fiber combo (cotton, alpaca, nylon and a tiny bit of wool) doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
The yarn was bought by my MIL and she can't knit anymore so I'm turning this into a vest for her.

@FanCityKnits What a funky yarn- I agree I have no idea how that material combination would react to things. It doesn't sound bad, but rather random regardless.
Keep us posted on how it knits up

@FanCityKnits @knitting @fiberarts Thicker yarn are often these "braided tubes" - I found that the ones I used looked "normal" in the project.
And yes, the cotton in fiber mix is weird - alpaca/wool/nylon would make a soft, durable fabric

The mix is
47% Cotton
42% Camelid - Alpaca
7% Manufactured Fibers - Nylon / Polyamide
4% Wool - MerinoThat's 89% of fibers that have no memory - what are they trying to achieve with 4% of wool here.
I once learned that any fibercontent below 10% is just for the lable, but doesn't actually do anything for the resulting project (things like lycra or glitter are different).

I'm still not sure, how I feel about the yarn. It feels lightweight but there's only 115 m to 50 g so I will probably need all 6 cakes for a rather small garment.
The stitch definition is surprisingly good, but the fabric feels fragile, no idea how it stands up to wear and tear.
But I'm just doing the knitting, the yarn was picked out by my MIL and it got recommended to her at an allegedly good store - we will see.

@FanCityKnits I like the stitch-pattern.

The basic stitch pattern is one of my go to's
row 1: k
row 2: k1,p1Pretty easy to knit, pretty to look at

Afternoon, I confess I was a bit dubious when I saw the picture of the yarn ๐งถ you posted yesterday, but it looks like it's knitting up nicely, I thought it might split alot. I like the colour hope your MiL will be happy with the end result

It does split, and in a quite nasty way. I started with knit picks needles but had to switch to the more blunt addi ones.
It's not fun to knit with. A yarn store selling this yarn to a very elderly woman who obviously hasn't knit in a long time is not one I'd recommend.
As she picked the yarn herself I'm at least sure she'll like the color. The pattern I picked is a style she often wears.
But I'll know at the beginning of May when we visit.

@FanCityKnits
You have to wonder about the store, they obviously just thought 'a sale is a sale' understanding your customers needs is crucial especially if you're a small business, but as you say you won't recommend them, they could probably do with a little feedback
Good luck with getting it finished, looking forward to seeing the end result

It's 4 hours from my home so I don't really care about the store. And they probably don't really care about my opinion ...
But you're right, maybe I should say something.

Yeah 4hrs is a way just to complain

Bottom part finished.
I'm using this pattern https://www.garnstudio.com/pattern.php?id=10480&cid=19, size M but only 50 cm long as my MIL has gotten very tiny (she wasn't tall to being and now she's close to 90).
I've joined the 3 bottom pieces after finishing the vent because I definitely don't want to sew with this yarn. Now about 30 rows until the armholes.
The yarn changes color depending on light - it's just the picture that makes it look different.

@FanCityKnits @knitting @fiberarts large arm holes are good, too, easier to put on

Looks really good, speedy progress too! ๐ฅฐYeah, 5.5 mm / US 9 needles will do that.
I don't like working with such large needles, but at least there's good progress on them.

Yeah, I was thinking that, too. While I shorten the whole garment quite a bit I'm keeping the armholes quite large.

The body of the vest is finished - I had a day off of work yesterday and dedicated most of that to this project.
I've now used exactly 5 of the 6 cakes, with only the button band missing I should be good.
I know I have a lot of buttons somewhere, I just don't remember where I put them
but I could find these and I think they look nice and have a good size - not to fiddly and not to heavy.Next: picking up sts
