Hey @EUCommission have you considered just like, buying Mozilla and making Firefox the sovereign EU browser?

Or even just funding a non-profit to maintain an EU fork which does things like respect EU laws and regulations

    Think about it

@eniko @EUCommission Got it, here's our new sovereign EU fork that integrates perfectly with your on-device mandatory EU ID app (Apple or Google account and device attestation required), and it comes with mandatory built-in age-appropriate content filters and suspicious download reporting for your safety™ ❤️

Vivaldi is not open-source. No matter how good the intentions of current Vivaldi leadership, without the source you're forever the hostage.

@Turre @hiphopheaven @luc0x61 @booboo @eniko @EUCommission And their excuse for not open sourcing it is just selfishness, being afraid to not have complete control over their users, to put it plainly. I would remain wary of Vivaldi.

        @eniko @EUCommission

        Bad idea.

The EU commission woul build spyware into it to supply intelligence to Israel.

And it would ban Palestinians and Iranians from using it, because of zionist sanctions.

        Why?

Because the EU is a zionist tool.

The answer is to free Firefox, not to swap abusive owner.

          "EU regulations"

          You mean chat control?

You mean sanctions on Iran and the blockade of Gaza?

The laws against using technology to call out Zionism's genocide?

          No thanks.

@eniko I don’t think it’s desirable for the EU to own Firefox. It wouldn’t be a “sovereign EU-browser”, but a “browser that makes the EU (the entity) sovereign”—and the EU, like any state, must be separated from the people it supposedly represents. Chat control, ageverification, the rush towards the AI-future, etc., these are things the EU is susceptible to. There’s nothing to say that an EU-owned Firefox would be much better *for its users*.

@eniko If anything, I think we should want Firefox to be independent of any state (in so far as that’s possible), and for it to be an open and transparent project. After all, the issue isn’t the *American* techindustry per se, but who’s in control over the technology we use daily, and that isn’t, in my mind, a question of national or European sovereignty; it’s a question of how decisions are made and implemented, and that spans borders.

@booboo @eniko @EUCommission And this would be a better idea than buying an US based company to develop EU software.

Oh well, then why not simply fund and support #LibreWolf which is already hosted on #Codeberg and developed in Europe?

@luc0x61 @booboo @eniko @EUCommission I would be down with Eurofox, except official initiatives from the EU suggest they seem to think AI is part of the solution, not the problem - so I think it would be Mistralfox or something within a year

Vivaldi is not open-source. No matter how good the intentions of current Vivaldi leadership, without the source you're forever the hostage.

@Turre @luc0x61 @booboo @eniko @EUCommission i don't care. Ipensourceness is just a bonus for me, features over opensourceness. Most projects end up with no relevant fork and an owner that decide to reject features they don't see fit

                                          1. so again, closed source except the google controlled part.

                                          2. these three parts are not equal. google controlling the engine gives them a lot of control over the implementation of web standards -- and not least, as we've seen with the manifest v2 deprecation, over what kind of browser extensions are viable.
