@jwildeboer i got ipod nano that still works fine, can even power fullsized headphones. Battery is not lasting very long anymore but for a 2 hour workout is fine. I just can't get scrobbler to work (for last.fm)

@Waveway A new battery will bring you back to 20+ hours 🙂

For those that don't know, all iPods with the 30 pin connector (so not the very first ones with FireWire) are still fully supported by MacOS. You can connect them to your MacBook with m4 or whatever and Finder will pop up saying "Ah, an iPod, Want me to put music on it?". It's really weird. They work. They are supported. And yes, you can buy USB-C to 30 pin cables for a few bucks that JustWork™.

@jwildeboer found an old iPod nano (3rd gen) here in the house from the previous owners. Attached it to my MacBook M3 and it asked immediately if I want to install an available software update. Unfortunately it did not start playing any song. Don't know if it's the battery or something else.

@fabienmarry Zune player owners would like the same respect from Microsoft. And Amazon Kindle owners too. Apple did it. That’s not me being amazed. It’s me giving them a tip of my hat.

@fabienmarry We are talking about 20 year old devices. That is noteworthy. 5 years, maybe 10 years, ok, should be normal. But 20 years. That’s noteworthy to me. The 2G and 3G mobile phones from 10 years ago can’t find a mobile network to book into.

Before you throw old iPods away, please send them to me. I will pay shipping costs. I am a hoarder of old tech. I might fix them and give them away to people that need a bit of joy in their life. I am in Munich, Germany.

@jwildeboer Sure but mobile phone require tons of infrastructure. iPod support is 99% basic file copy via USB + a tiny private DB.

@jwildeboer And for those who use Linux and are prepared to install Chromium, TunesReloaded is an astonishingly useful tool for syncing your iPod on an OS that otherwise has no other way of doing so.

@fabienmarry My iPod classic 6th gen is from 2005, the iPod Nano 3rd Gen is from 2007. So 20 years is an acceptable approximation.

6 hours of listening to music later. Battery still almost full. Those iPods are still a marvel of technology. And as it is connected to post-battery headphones (Koss PortaPro), I can just enjoy another bunch of hours with fav music 😉

@jwildeboer It's a very attractive idea, but the 8GB would cause me so much stress to pick which albums I'd put on it and which not.

My player of choice is the sandisk clip* and not an ipod but the storage restriction is similar. And I don't choose the music placed on them - every few weeks I start a script to randomly fill them with tracks from my locally stored music collection. The music I'm listening to when out of the house was selected by me but is still a surprise. Works for me.

(It has a 30 pin-to-firewire connection. No idea if it can communicate with a current Mac)

Before you throw old iPods away, please send them to me. I will pay shipping costs. I am a hoarder of old tech. I might fix them and give them away to people that need a bit of joy in their life. I am in Munich, Germany.
