Neil: There's a wealth of amazing Free software out there!

Turns out that I don't actually use that much Free software after all.
@neil And a masochist as well

Neil: There's a wealth of amazing Free software out there! I use loads of it.
Them: What do you use to write documents?
Me: I use vim. I write in Markdown, then convert it. (typst + pandoc)
Them: What about presentations?
Me: I use vim. I write in Markdown, then convert it. (revealjs)
Them: Your website? Blog?

@neil

@ColinTheMathmo @neil Would make an amazing laptop sticker...

@neil Ive never taken the energy to move from Nano to vim. What's are some pros/cons?
No idea, I'm afraid, as I haven't used nano.
-
@neil I did have some experience with runoff as a "markup" language on a DEC RSTS/E system about 1980. I may have been accused by a high school teacher with cheating because all my classmates had to use typewriters, or OMG, write the damn paper in longhand.
How? I had access to the school district's computer center and its daisy -wheel printers.
@roadskater @neil Oh I used to love those daisywheels!
-
@neil Ive never taken the energy to move from Nano to vim. What's are some pros/cons?
@watchfulcitizen @neil Insane totally illogical controls. Bragging rights if you can learn how to use it.
-
@neil Well, obviously the more superior way would be to use emacs
@grumpydad @neil Yes, with Emacs you get rid of the bloat of markdown and only use one software, Emacs and its built-in org (and all the other built-in things).
-
@neil Maybe the real free software was the editors we made along the way?
@shanecelis @neil That's why RMS was right to start his GNU project with an editor.
-
-
@neil Been using vi(m) for 30+ years. But Markdown, haven't got there yet.
@roadskater @neil You don't need to. All these jobs can be done with LaTeX, too.. and vim to edit the LaTeX, of course (or emacs, if you are using free software instead of open source).

@harib_murshidi @ghouston @neil, you joke but if the current trend of dishwashers requiring an app and wifi, you might as well install Linux and Vim in the future to start custom washing settings

@neil that's a lot of ways to say you can't exit vim.

@neil interesting. I default to md files but in a world where we can use llms to easily convert ppt to md and vice versa i donβt worry about this as much anymore
