        @neil I did have some experience with runoff as a "markup" language on a DEC RSTS/E system about 1980. I may have been accused by a high school teacher with cheating because all my classmates had to use typewriters, or OMG, write the damn paper in longhand.

        How? I had access to the school district's computer center and its daisy -wheel printers.

          @watchfulcitizen @neil Insane totally illogical controls. Bragging rights if you can learn how to use it.

            @neil Well, obviously the more superior way would be to use emacs

            @grumpydad @neil Yes, with Emacs you get rid of the bloat of markdown and only use one software, Emacs and its built-in org (and all the other built-in things).

                  @roadskater @neil You don't need to. All these jobs can be done with LaTeX, too.. and vim to edit the LaTeX, of course (or emacs, if you are using free software instead of open source).

                                      @neil interesting. I default to md files but in a world where we can use llms to easily convert ppt to md and vice versa i donโ€™t worry about this as much anymore

                                        @imclaren

                                        I find writing presentations in Markdown, with CSS for styling, much easier than faffing with a visual editor, but then I haven't used a visual presentation editor in years and so might be out of touch.

                                          @neil i usually write the markdown then ask an llm to create powerpoint using a provided template or from scratch. itโ€™s corporate world collaboration lock in
