    What do you think causes non-tech people to choose walled, algorithmic gardens ran by right wing extremists over their own open, public websites?

    What can change this? #indieweb

    I'm thinking:

    1. better and easier to deploy authoring tools
    2. campaigning news websites / music venues to make an effort to find links to open sources before they link to walled gardens
    3. campaigning record labels / artists to post outside walled gardens
    4. campaigning search engines and chatbots to prefer links to outside walled gardens

      @hdv Good question. If you asked people if they wanted to be on a network that is free and that does not manipulate them, they may agree. But only if everybody else is there too…

      @hdv That is why I am a big supporter of the digital independence day, where people with some knowledge teach others how to leave places like that.
      And I have been thinking about building alternatives. The reality is most of the time: they already exist, but nobody knows/cares.

        @hdv I find it particularly ironic (and sad) given the band's political stance and previous issue with Meta following the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

            @hdv even more disappointing from a political act like Massive Attack. It seems the tour is managed by Live Nation which is equally disappointing 😕

              @hdv If no one complains about it, it won't change.

              Maybe they suppose that their website / mailing list is useless and that everything is working perfectly. Maybe no one in the band is charged of getting in touch with the audience.

                  two totally uninformed guesses:

                  they don't get immediate feedback from mailing lists, website

                  they hired a professonal media/PR team that thinks of Instagram as "real" and websites not

                  Seems to me that good multi-posting tools would help a lot, though the walled gardens are going to try and make them hard

                  @hdv
